91 Ranger Auto Trans. oil cooler lines (removal)

My nephew has a 91 Ranger, 2.9L, 2wd, with an automatic transmission.
The trans. has been diagnosed by a shop as needing a rebuid. He was
quoted $2000.00 which he can't afford. I told him I would remove it and
obtain other quotes because the labour to remove is high. Got a haynes
manual and everthing was as described untill I tried to remove the oil
cooler lines. The oil filler tube which runs in front of these lines was removed but a small stub that the tube fits inside, remains. I don't have
the room to get a wrench on the lines to remove them. If anybody has
any ideas I would appreciate the help.............Pat
