Question engine service light is on

hi y'all!!
engine service light is on and my fuel gauge fluctuates with no apparent reason (one moment its showing full then after a few seconds, it shows empty). it happened as soon as I came back from a 21 hour drive from houston to dallas during rita's hayday!
m planning on bringing my xterra (se 2003 4x2) to the nearest dealer, but would appreciate it if somebody could enlighten me on the issue. First time it happened. Thanx.

Re: engine service light is on

I know after a fnow this happen if you don't tighten the gas tank lid until it clicks. It will reset after a few tanks if that is it. But a dealer check might conirm.
