Code 54 means I need a New Cam Pos. Sensor??

Ok here is the deal this guy traded me his 1995 neon for some wheels hehehe sucker,, because he is sick and tired of trying to find out why it will not start..

I get a code 12 and a code 54..

I have checked,,,, getting spark,,, getting fuel and the the Crankshaft Position Sensor is working fine..

If I replace the Camshaft Position Sensor will this fix the problem? I was also reading the PCM could be shot???

I read a bunch of stuff about the code 54 but noone gives a direct answer as to how to tell if it is the PCM or the Camshaft Position Sensor? also what is the distributor Sync Unit?? is this a fancy schamcy word for the whole Cam Pos Sensor, Crank Pos Sensor and the PCM as one??
Please Help

Yea I know the codes but this one seems vague.. Is it the PCM or is it the Camshaft Position Sensor?? I was reading elsewhere that is could be either with this code and how would you test the CPS.. My haynes manual does not have anything in there for testing the CPS

Thanks
Jet

Your code 54 is for the Camshaft position sensor. Locate it and unplug it and make sure it is seated correctly and that it is clean. You may need to replace it, but it is very easy to do and it is notorious for leaking, so you may fix a leak at the same time. The actual code says:
54 No signal detected from camshaft position sensor
