1997 VW Jetta 2.0 engine question

I previously thought that my valve pan gasket was leaking oil onto the manifold and burning thus causeing smoke. After closer inspection I notice that there is oil seeping around the filler cap. Also I inspected the other side of the valve pan (left side if you are standing in front of the car looking at the engine) and I noticed that there is oil around a valve (not sure what it is) that goes into the top of the valve pan. There are a couple of hoses leading from this valve (which had a piece of duct tap around it end to keep it in place). One of the hoses goes down tand into the front of the engine. That line is rotted and severed in the middle. My question are;

1. What is that valve?
2. How should it be connected to valve pan?
3. How important is that hose and what is it for?
4. Where can I find replacement parts?
5. What would cause oil to come out of top of the oil pan?

Thanks for trying to help a not to mechanicaly inclined person try to fix there ride. If you need more info let me know and I will ramble some more.

Thumbs up

if you are not mechanically inclined i dont recomend doing this. It sounds simple but this is how people break there cars, trying to fix them when there instinct gets in the way. If you insist on doing this yourself get a haynes manual that wil benefit you greatly. or simply go to a mechanic and see how he does it and ask questions. no shame in learning. Hope this helped

Not sure of the what that hose is exactly. Pick up a repair manual and look at all the parts that have to do with oil. parts can be found at ecstuning.com or other places that are similar. As long as you have good common sence and an ability to learn as you go you should be able to figure it out. It sounds like you just need to replace the hose or fix the connection. Good luck
