A/C Problems with Cobalt

Yesterday morning my GF asks me to take her new Cobalt into the shop to have its AC checked out. When the AC was turned on it was just the fan, no cooled air. This morning (after handing her the keys to my G6 so she could take it in to work) I brought it in, was told anythin AC-related at this point would be fully under warranty (the car is 2 months old). After an hour in there they say it's working and that they didn't really know what was wrong with it, they sit me inside the car and tell me to "remind my girlfriend to turn on the little star button that activate the AC" (thanks! even with 5 other GM vehicles between our families including mine we never would have known that!). Sure enough he fires it up and out comes the cold air.

I didn't think much of it, then right when I got into the driveway I turned the AC off but left the fan blowing and guess what, NO DIFFERENCE. It was 17C outside, I'm thinking that's why the guys at the shop thought it was coming on?

Now that it's warmed up a bit I just tried it and there is ZERO AC goodness coming out of the vents. How can a GM Goodwrench centre spend an our with the car and release it to us saying the AC was working when it wasn't?

Has anyone else had AC problems with their car? I'm going to have to go waste more time there tomorrow morning (whoohoo).

Re: A/C Problems with Cobalt

Nope, nothing wrong with the A/C yet. My biggest problem was my ABS giving out.

I've also wondered why when you hit the little snowflake looking button it still runs the compressor. I don't think there is a way to have it on "vent" only.

Other than you guys not operating the buttons correctly (which is very hard to imagine) I don't know what could be up. Try having your GF press every combination of button while you watch under the hood for the compressor to kick on. Maybe that will help you guys figure out what the deal is.

Re: A/C Problems with Cobalt

I know what you're saying but it's impossible to NOT know how to turn on the AC in a GM car. Set the first dial to at least one (fan speed), press the star button and make sure the temp dial is in the blue area. The compressor is indeed engaging, there's just no cool air coming out.

I have booked another appointment to go there tomorrow morning at 7:30 and they better get to the bottom of it. It's pretty obvious that the AC isn't working when pressing the snowflake button on and off while the fans are running has NO IMPACT on how cool the air coming out is. When I do that on my G6 the difference is quite dramatic. ugh

Re: A/C Problems with Cobalt

Make an appointment at 2 in the afternoon. (warm outside) See if the compressor is running when AC is selected. I've read the new trucks have a very small refrig. charge and even a slight leak will kill it quick. Any updates to the situation?
