Question Running Hot and losing oil

I have a 1989 S10 4cyl. 2 wheel drive. When I check the oil the dipstick is so hot you can harldy touch it. It also seems to lose all the oil but I can't see any puddles underneath and figure I should for the amount of oil it loses. My oil pressure is ok at least until I lose the oil. It doesnt smoke one bit. Not sure what is going on any help appreciated.

Re: Running Hot and losing oil

It's probably loosing the oil under pressure, so while the motors running.

Try running it while you look for the leak.

Oil gets too hot to touch, and that's not a bad thing. I've heard that oil sometimes reaches temps over 200 degrees

If you want you can buy a oil cooler and install it, but you shouldn't have to unless you tow heavy trailers up big hills. You should be more worried about your transmission if it's an automatic.

OverboardProject,
Thanks for your reply. Sorry it has taken me so long to reply to you but I had computer problems. Spilled coffee on the keyboard.
Well anyway I found the leak at the Oil Pressure sending unit. I have purchased a new one. Not on yet. I hope that that is the only one. I also found that without the filler cap on I don't lose as much oil. So I hope I am gonna fix this with the new sending unit.

Re: Running Hot and losing oil

Don't you hate it when the coffee jumps out at the keyboard?

If it's the 2.8L you'll have to suport the motor, and remove the motor's motor mount to replace the unit.
I don't know about the other motors

I hope that's all that's wrong, I'm 1/2 thinking that your PVC valve might be partly plugged. It should be removing the excessive pressure from the crankcase. Their cheap, and it's the object plugged into a valve cover with a hose going to it.

Good Luck
