Angry charging/electrial problem

i have a 1991 rs camero the stock 305 has been replaced with a carborated 350 with msd box and a hei coil. i recently changed plugs,wires,cam,starter,battery,and alternator. i cannot get any charge to my battery the wire on the back of my alt has no charge the red wire in my 2 wire plug on the alt has charge. when first cranked all my gauges in the dash work when the car warms up all the gauges quit and the ac stops blowing cold please help me

Your not running the stock alternator I take it? You have the older GM two wire alternator? The terminal marked 2 on the case should provide the alt. with 12v when the vehicles running, if it's not, you won't get any output from the alternator.

the alt im running is 4 a 91 model it has a 2 wire plug on top one wire is black the other is red and one wire on the back when running the red wire on the plug has power thother 2 does not?

I thought GM stopped using that alternator in the Camaro in the late-80's, but I've certainly been wrong before.

Does you alternator look like this:

I ran into a similar problem so here goes:

The red wire (#2) must be a constant 12v, which I believe you're getting. You need to supply the white (#1) wire with 12v or the alternator will not produce any power. You could temporarily run both wires off the terminal in the back which goes to the battery. Your alternator should now be charging (with engine running).

If it's not charging at this point, either your voltmeter or alternator is bad.

Note: If you keep the white wire attached to the rear post when the car is not running, it will drain your battery. You must either install a switch in the white (#1) wire, or run it off the ignition (only comes on when the vehicle is running).
