I'm trying this post again.

I have an 03 2WD Silverado that the rear rotors are completely trashed on. iT has 25K miles.

Has anyone else had this problem.


Seems to me that the ABS must be not working right, since the front rotors are not too bad at all.

I've never had a vehicle that wore the rear rotors before the fronts.

Personally I think GM rotors went in the tank after 2002.

My 2002 Tahoe had 131,000 never had brakes or rotors replaced

My 2005 Silverado, turned at 9000, replaced 16,000

I had a 2002 xcab Z71 that by 35000 miles, the front rotors were turned twice and the rear rotors once by the dealer. The dealer also installed new rear pads, at my expense. From my experence with those rotors,I'd say that the rear doesn't do enough to stop the truck, hence the warped front rotors and rusted rear ones. I never did like the way that truck stopped from day one.

it also depends on driving habits and highway or city driving. or if you are hauling alot of weight or pulling a trailer. my truck has 36000 and the brakes are great.

The brakes on my truck were crappy when I bought it with 87K mi on it.I didnt bother with turning the rotors. I went and purchased all 4 rotors from a quality parts store,and top of the line pads. Brakes work just dandy. Mine is a NBS 99 Silverdildo.

Maybe they make the rotors out of recycled Fords now

That could cause them to wear prematurely

I had a 99 WORK truck 1/2 T that went 128,000 on the original pads and that's with LOTS of stop and go driving. My current 02 with 45,000 shows no wear, but a friends 03 had a rear rotor go metal to metal at 70,000. I helped him change it and I think that tightening the caliper bolts without back up on the nuts that are mounted in rubber bindes the bolts and won't let the caliper float like it is supposed to.

My rear rotors went out at 60k, I had them turned to last a week or two before I left for deployment, I got back and purchased cross-drilled and slotted rotors on all 4 wheels and ceramic pads all around. The truck is quiet and stops very well. I did not change the calipers i just cleaned them really well. I've put about 10k on the new rotors and pads and everything looks good so far. All in all it cost me about 450 in parts and half a day to put it all on.

I had all rotors replaced at 36k and at 65k they needed replacing again. I went with slotted Brembo rotors at a fraction of the cost of factory parts and NAPA ceramic pads. I also switched over to the Super Blue Racing brake fluid.

Dealer replaced mine in warranty with a few thousand miles (warped), and they still didn't make it to 40,000. They were way beyond turning. Salt tears them up, here in NY.

I have a 03 4x4 silverado pu, with 39k miles on it, and the rear brakes are grinding. I have never pulled a trailer, or much of a load. I bought it new. I have had chevy trucks since 91, and usually get 65k before brakes go. I checked the front brakes last night, (assuming they would wear out first) but they are fine. Yet the pads have chunks out of them, and seem to be wearing uneven on the inside. I will pull the rear apart tonight, but sounds like they are worn out. How is this possible?
Rear brakes never wear out before front.
Has GM cut their quality by this much?

I do know that ther was an ABS recall on certain year and model GM trucks. Had to do with back brakes Thats all I know

On my '02 2500HD the rear rotors were all scored up after only 6,000 miles. The fronts were always fine. I took it back to the dealer and they said there was nothing wrong with them. I emailed Chevy with pictures of the backs and comparing the scoring the fronts, and they just said to take it back to the dealer. I did, and the dealer told them, yes, there's something not right, but it wasn't warrenty-able.

Fed up, I just said F it and I rode them out. I got 72,000 miles out of that first set of pads. I figured it couldn't be that bad. And I just slapped another aftermarket set of ceramics in after that. They only lasted about 30,000 miles. The fronts without the scoring needed replacement at 78,000 miles.

I just changed the back rotors and pads. The front rotors could use it too, but I'll wait till I change the pads.

I believe the problem I had is due to the beveled edges on the brake pads. I do a lot of beach driving, and I think the sand gets wedged between the rotor and the pad from being thrown into that bevel and scores them. I don't believe the front pads had that bevel to them.

03 silverado 50,000 miles replaced rotors and pads never seen rotors rusted that bad one of the front rotors front left rusted to the hub took awhile beating it with a hammer to get the rottor off

I have a 2003 2wd and the rear rotors are warped, getting ready to replace soon. It has 63000 miles, mostly highway. When I last checked, the pads were still meaty. Haven't added any fluid and the master cylinder is still at the top. Been told by numerous people that this is a bad design and the rears go before the front. The reason being is the solid mounting of the caliper doesn't allow for the end play on the axle. The axles are constantly moving in and out against the pads causing friction against the rotors causing premature wear and warping. Don't know if there are any aftermarket remedies available.
