I think I found the source of my bad gas milage/power

I have been struggling to understand what is going on with my 96 blazer. I have only had it for about 5-6 weeks and to me it seemed to be lacking power and my milage has been consistantly 14.5mpg (mixture of city and highway). I had nothing to compare it too. Because I never had a blazer before.

The engine is a new Jasper with 4000 miles on it. I put all but 20 miles on it. I replaced the distributor cap and rotor today and found out that the treads that receive front screw that holds the distributor cap down is broken off of the distributor. Only the back screw is holding the distibutor cap down.

It still runs. Is there any quick fixes or do I have to replace the distributor. If I have to replace the distributor any suggestions (sorry I did not check other threads for this).

Take it back to whoever installed the engine and have them fix it, they broke the distributor cap retaining screws.

Other than that, read this thread:

Hey LT thanks for the advice. I am just going to replace the distributor. Is that something I can do myself (only 90.00 at Autozone).

Do you think only having one screw holding the distributor cap down lead to loss of mpg and power?

You better watch it, it is not an easy job and you can seriously screw things up.

If the cap is secure, it shouldn't be causing a problem.

Remember, you have a new engine, it needs 5000 miles to have the rings set.

It really is not secure, I can move it up and down slightly by hand. Is this something I should worry about?

Yea, it is shot.

It was probably broke by the instrallers when they were installing the new engine.

Re: I think I found the source of my bad gas milage/power

i have the front screw striped out on mine and the backs the only thing holding it on but still runs like a champ and decent gas mileage.
