4.8 worth it?
Is a 4.8 worth modding? I really like the powerband it has and the sound i get from it it has a flowmaster cat back with a 40 series muffler and the ugliest home made cold air intake youll ever see. Ive seen in the jegs there is a cam offered for 4.8,5.3 and 6.0 motors, so i was thinking about having a shop install the .531" cause it says 1500-6000 rpm and since mine shifts at 5500 under WOT. I was also looking at that STS turbo kit for silverados, so would a 4.8 be worth it or should i just give a parts store the core and get a different motor, i have a friend who works at one and can get me his employee discount which for those motors is between 800-1000 dollars off. Thanks.

if your gonna change motors you might as well get a better trans also and go to the 6.0. i would go ahead and mod the engine you have, its not much less power than the 5.3.

If you're looking at an engine swap, it would probably be easier just to get another truck. Or, wait until the '07 model year comes out. the Atlas 6 (I-6) gets 290 hp, which I believe is a little better than my '02 5.3

Re: 4.8 worth it?
Keep the 4.8 and mod it. Its alot more fun to kill someone with something like a Hemi, and then tell them " oh, its just a little 4.8" And if you have the $$$$ definetly get the turbo kit. Even with the 4.8, if you get into some serious mods, either build up, or replace your transmission.

Re: 4.8 worth it?
And remember that the turbo will give you MPG.... Why would you want that in days like these???

I'm going to have to disagree with everything that has been said here. If I were going to seriously mod....there's no way I would stay with the 4.8L engine. I've had one, so I have a side by side comparison to what I have in the truck now. A buddy of mine in Texas has basically the same setup as mine(same cam, converter, truck style), only he's running a 4.8L instead of the 6.0L. He finally got the truck into the 13s after a long drawn out battle with the 14s. My first pass with the new setup was a 12.64, and has since gone 12.40 on the motor. He's got every bolt on available, a cam/heads 4.8L and a built 4l60e, and just getting into the HIGH 13s.
There is no comparison between the 4.8L and the 6.0L when it comes to modding. Of couse, this also depends on how fast you want to go.
