Possible Odometer tampering/ runaround from mechanics I talked to.

I have 2000 chevy Tahoe Z71 4wd. I purchased this vehicle from a private owner. It has 35,000 miles on it. I suspect the odometer may have been tampered with. My friend told me they probably disconnected the odometer for a period of time. How is that possible with all the new technology? The Odo is a manual one. Is there a way to tell? No one around my area seems to know. The dealer told me he would need to remove the transmission sensor to tell, and that would cost 250 dollars minimum. The local shop told me since I have a manual odo its the cable was disconnected and to remove mine and look for wear.

Carfax comes up with nothing, I figure there has to be some knowledge base on the internet.
