Police set up mobile SMOG CHECK blockade?? WTF?Shpyder 08-31-2005, 11:52 AM Ok. I thought I'd seen everything in fcking CA. But oh no. Yesterday on my way to college, I saw one police car, a bunch of orange cones, and something that looked like an ice-cream truck with wires coming out of it, and a dyno-looking machine, with some poor bastards car running on it and a fan in front, cooling it....on the side of the road. I asked around school what it was. I was told it was a "smog flagdown station." Police will randomly stop cars they suspect cannot pass smog, and have them do a smog check right there and then...everything from an 81 Chrylser to a Shpyder. And since my new 6-bolt is going to be hooked up the ass with cams and everything, I'm guessing I will not pass, just like Vince [BoostedSpyder] didn't. Are the god damn police running out of criminals to catch? Shortage of murderers and drug pushers and gangsters to stop? That is just a disgusting use of resources. Setting up a blockade to hand out DUIs is fine, makes sense. Random insurance, registration and liscence checks, fine. But now, a flag down smog check ? Youve got to be fcking me. I am begining to hate this god damn state with a passion now. Might as well use these police "officers" to bust up a McDonald's because my "cheeseburger isnt done right", or tell them to help out with the laundry, since apparently there is no more god damn crime in California any more. :disappoin bluespeed 08-31-2005, 12:16 PM Oh man.. and I've always thought that Cali was the place to be. That is horrible though. I think the Californian government should have their smog checker shoved up their ass so they can be shipped out of Cali. I realise that they strive for a cleaner, pollution-free enviroment, but there are much, MUCH more things out there (some even including the government's) that produce more smog then local vehicles. If anything, the government should pay Californian drivers for such a hassle to deal with, or at least something to compensate for such dumb actions (ie. cheaper gas [it is pretty damn high where I come from]) I don't know if i can deal with new types of feul being introduced into cars too. Sure they would be safer to the enviroment, but I'm so used to smelling gasoline at the gas pump, it just wouldn't be right if I smelled anything else. Damn fumes.. I'm hooked :) I guess it's just like butter vs. margarine. We all know margarine's lower in fat, but who gives a shit. If we had an option of using gasoline and a substitute, I'd still choose gasoline. it's just one of those guilty pleasures I suppose :p Eclipse4ever 08-31-2005, 01:02 PM Its kinda crazy thinking they are stopping you for a smog check but on the other hand me and most of my friends have test pipes on the cars with mods that make the car impossible to pass so we get it done by a ... friend :) and if we get pulled over its almost 100 percent that I wont pass . I though in US cops needed a reason to pull you over ? Its starting to look like Europe, I got pulled over back home for speaking on cell phone ... wtf, i know there is not a law against cell phones. I payed the cop since he didnt know how to use my US license. I wish I can pay cops in US so I can get out of a ticket, it would be so much easier and every one would be happy :). DSMNerd6889 08-31-2005, 04:56 PM I live in Kansas and I don't have to put up with that kind of crap. But everytime I hear one of these stories, it really pisses me off. It's bullshit the stuff they put you guys thru. But the one thing you guys should think about is going political. The only reason that they can do this is because the people that vote agree with them. Politicians are all puppets, they do what the voters want them to. Get out and vote, vote those bastards out of office and show them that you want to protect your interest. *get's off soap box* Thanks for listening. Eagalicious 08-31-2005, 05:01 PM I said it once and I will say it again.... I told ya to leave Shpyder... So... LEAVE that commie state and come to Georgia so I can drive your ride :icon16: :naughty: :smokin: Congrats on being recommisioned by the way.. How does she do?? Talk to ya later.. John Talon69 08-31-2005, 05:06 PM here in NY 95 and older do not have to be checked for smog test ;) Thats why i have a 95 ;) Thor06 08-31-2005, 06:35 PM I realise that they strive for a cleaner, pollution-free enviroment, but there are much, MUCH more things out there (some even including the government's) that produce more smog then local vehicles. Yeah no shit. You ever watch the smoke stacks on dump trucks and the like? I bet that stupid vehicle shoots more shit into the air everytime it goes 0-60 than what my car makes in a year. I used to want to go to Cali when I graduated, but now hell no. I read about how cops are using modifications as probable cause to pull people over. In Super Street (I think it was anyway, a couple months back) I read how the cops came to Hot Import Days and towed like 15 cars away! I am glad I live in Minnesota, we dont have to put up with any bullshit like that, other than the usual cop shit. I was damn near stopped behind some other cars one time at a stop light and a cop comes around the corner and pulls me over down town in the middle of the day (random people I didnt know come up to me every now and then and say, "Hey, I saw you get pulled over!") and tells me I was going 48 in a 30. I got away with a written warning, but fuck. I was going maybe 15 mph when that cop was able to see me, but its modified so I must have been fucking around right? Nope, I had just gotten done with ultimate frisbee practice and I was tired as hell so I was driving slower than I usually do. Whatever though, no harm done, but you guys have it shitty. Good luck Shpyder, I hope they dont get you! Shpyder 08-31-2005, 07:11 PM Congrats on being recommisioned by the way.. How does she do?? Well, not quite recommissioned yet. The long block arrives in 1 week, so it'll be about 2 weeks before I can answer that! But this whole smog check deal makes me want to just keep my car garaged all the time. Things are getting really insane. If I werent smack in the middle of my B.Sc. degree, I'd quit and move somewhere else! You ever watch the smoke stacks on dump trucks and the like? I bet that stupid vehicle shoots more shit into the air everytime it goes 0-60 than what my car makes in a year. LMAO, aint that the truth. The worst thing is, that they have this thing set up right outside college. So you get all these kids with hooked up cars falling right into the trap, making the already tough student life even more hectic than it already is. I'm so busy and tired with school all the time, I never party, nothing. My car is my only release. And now, the state decides to take that away too. ARRGGHHHH. I feel like going Rambo on them sometimes! lol. Check this out: NEW SMOG RULES FOR CALIFORNIA Under California's complicated new Smog Check II program. how your car or truck will be testred depends a lot on where you live. Parts of the state with the dirtiest air -- mostly the Sacramento, Central Valley, Los Angeles and San Diego areas -- will face the toughest tests on new equipment. For other parts of the state, including most of the Bay Area, there are also strict new rules and standards. HOW REMOTE SMOG SENSING WORKS Remote smog sensors are appearing along California roadsides to measure emissions from cars as they drive by. The entire process takes about three seconds. (1) An infrared beam shot across the highway picks up the contents of a car's exhaust. A calibrator and computer on the other side of the road screen and measure the emissions. (2) At the same time, a camera snaps a pictire of the vehicle's license plate. The state uses that in information to find and notify the vehicle's owner if emissions are too high. source: http://www.dui.com/drunk_driving_research/smog_law.html *(scroll 2/3 down) Savior1974 09-01-2005, 12:55 AM OMG........ FUCK CALIFORNIA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FUCK THEM AND THERE DUMB LAWS!!!! MY DSM + SMOG CHECKS = Impounded FO-EVA I swear I'm gone, By next year I'll be in texas. Were the gas is 93 octane, cheaper, and women are sexy as hell. l_eclipse_l 09-01-2005, 10:10 AM HOW REMOTE SMOG SENSING WORKS Remote smog sensors are appearing along California roadsides to measure emissions from cars as they drive by. [/b] source: http://www.dui.com/drunk_driving_research/smog_law.html *(scroll 2/3 down) How in the hell can that shit be enforced? That is flat out rediculous. That's like the BS where the camera snaps a shot of your car if you don't fully stop at a stop sign. What is wrong with the government nowadays, they think they can make rules up for the hell of it, just to make it look like they are doing something. Everyone move out of California, then what are they gonna do. Nothing, because they won't have jobs. The whole system is biased. Shpyder 09-01-2005, 01:54 PM Well, I called up SBR today, regarding smog. They said that the CEL might come on after the swap, but other than that, leaning things out a bit using DSMLink or the Apexi, would be good enough to make the car pass smog without trouble. Which is strange, since Vince couldnt pass with his cams, even with an AFC! Motor will be shipped out in 2 weeks. (they seem to add a week every time I call for ETA, lol). They said that DSMLink can turn off a CEL. Now, I've turned "off" a CEL before, but that merely reset the whole computer, and not just the light. Hence all monitors were reset, and the diagnostic computer couldnt read any signal off my car at all. I had to drive about 60-80 miles for everything to reset. Does DSMLink reset the monitors, or can it actually isolate the CEL light itself? macder 09-01-2005, 05:05 PM Aside from the mandatory emmsions test every 2 years, they are enforcing an idle free by-law in Ontario. If you get caught idling for more then 10 seconds, they'll slap a $200-$300 ticket on you. I have nothing against this by-law since idling get's you nowhere, wastes fuel, and contributes to climate change. But random smog blockades seem unreasonable, Police are supposed to fight crime, not pollution. California tax payers should protest this since their tax money was used to buy such equipment. 2of9 09-01-2005, 05:08 PM damn...that sucks man. SpyderGuy97 09-01-2005, 05:50 PM Here in Indiana its boring as hell, but absolutley no emissions where I live. Nayr747 09-01-2005, 07:09 PM They do it with drunk drivers why not with pollution crimes? I agree that pulling people over for having a loud exhaust, etc is f-ing stupid and that the resources could probably be spent on something better (with DUI checks too) but both drunken driving and pollution harm others. And while I wouldn't like it if I drove while drunk and learned that there were gonna be DUI checks, it's still the right thing to do. I feel for you though. It would piss me off too if they did that to me. But that's why I'm cutting up my pretty Megan dp to put a cat on it. Politicians are all puppets, they do what the voters want them to. Yeah, that's how it's SUPPOSED to work but that's not reality. I guess it's just like butter vs. margarine. We all know margarine's lower in fat, but who gives a shit. Margarine and butter are equally bad for you, just in different ways. Something like Smart Balance or plant oils like olive oil are the best for you. bluespeed 09-01-2005, 07:56 PM Margarine and butter are equally bad for you, just in different ways. Something like Smart Balance or plant oils like olive oil are the best for you. Thanks for your input :) Would dipping my toast in olive oil be tasty? Maybe I should stick to PB&J. Anywho, margarine and butter are equally bad for you, but so is everything else these days. Why can't we just live like cavemen. ...with DSMs. Nayr747 09-01-2005, 08:32 PM Yeah pb (not the crap jiff kind, the adams kind) is actually better for you than butter or margarine. It's a plant oil after all. It has less fat and saturated fat and has things that butter doesn't like protein and vitamins. Btw, not everything is equally bad for you. If it was, you shouldn't have a problem drinking your used motor oil. :) Thor06 09-01-2005, 11:59 PM Anyone want to chip in and buy a small 3rd world country, move there, and do what ever the fuck we want with our cars? l_eclipse_l 09-02-2005, 12:33 AM Anyone want to chip in and buy a small 3rd world country, move there, and do what ever the fuck we want with our cars? lmao :ylsuper: Shpyder 09-02-2005, 12:40 AM They do it with drunk drivers why not with pollution crimes? ...but both drunken driving and pollution harm others. I think that is a very unfair comparison. I do not think that the effects of drunk driving compare to the effects of vehicle pollution at all. One car with a drunk driver, one car emitting unburnt hydrocarbons....which has potential for more destruction? I refuse to believe that my eclipse lets out more aggregate toxic fumes, than Governor Schwarzenegger's Hummer. When was the last time anyone heard of a person get hurt because someone didn't pass a smog check? Drunk driving is a whole different area of crime. I agree that air pollution sucks ass, but the fact remains that the commercial and industrial sectors of this country are one the worst culprits of air pollution in the world today. I think its absurd and unfair to target vehicles, in one particular state, that are emitting 10 hydrocarbons more than they should, and force them off the road. That is ridiculous. It's like saying "Lets catch people who rob $0.99 stores, and let those involved in million-dollar corporate fraud walk away." What is happening here is not a whole lot different. The big industries have tons of lobby power, and lobbying is how laws are made, changed, or destroyed. Your governors, your senetors, evern the president, are all pawns. The real power is with those who have money, and as far as this thing goes, the money is with the multi-billion dollar industrial sector. They are approached concerning their destruction of the environment; they pay a zillion bucks for lobbying, and the "clean the air" agenda is taken out on passenger vehicles. There are tons of ways the smog laws can be relaxed. It's all bullshit politics. All these muscle cars, both new and classic, and all these monstrous SUVs, churn out disgusting amounts of exhaust, and all the law can do is target 4-bangers with a fart can. :disappoin crunchymilk55 09-02-2005, 12:43 AM "OMG........ We could use ya saviour....I know plenty of DSM's that will own us both ;) COME ON DOWN viet_boiiiii 09-02-2005, 01:54 AM Lucky i dont have an eclipse anymore LOL.. jk dam i miss that thing. Nayr747 09-02-2005, 06:12 PM Let me say Shpyder that I totally agree with you. It's a currupt system where the people with money and power get off and the little guy gets screwed. They really should focus on the biggest causes of the problem and not just the people that can't fight back. We needs to start fighting back: whether it's anti-union policies, non-livable wages, wars that the rich conveniently dont fight in, etc. "Take the power back" lol Why don't you guys in Cali start a petition? It's like saying "Lets catch people who rob $0.99 stores, and let those involved in million-dollar corporate fraud walk away." That's how it is and it sucks. Coorporate crime is a BIG problem but they just get a slap on the wrist. MUCH more corporate crime is commited than "normal" crime. cficare68 09-03-2005, 12:44 AM Here in Idaho i depends on what county you live in. The county I live in is ADA county and you are required to pass an emissions test every year or else they revoke you registration if you don't pass after an alloited amount of time, however in canyon county which like 20 mins awau you don't have to even take one MoozillaGSX 09-03-2005, 01:56 PM man.....i hate this state so much......... little off topic, i was at the baggle shop this morning fo my lunch and a cop with like 4 differetn wepons on him came in and i almost lodt controll laughing while thinkgs about how he will never get to use anything other than his pencil because around here they do nothing but target imports with ANY kinda of modification. LoL....he kept looking at me while i was crackin up, but i couldnt help my self. and i definetly agreee with Spyder....but seriously unless enough people care about somthign to challenge the way somting works nothing will change and they can get away with murder, and they count on the fact that most people are in fact like sheep, they will go where ever the people with money tell them too. no one these days thinks they can stand up for them selve , they just bitch and complane and do as their told. its really a bummer. HiT-TheNos420 10-08-2005, 04:40 AM I know this is a past thread, but just to respond on Shpyder's remarks about a senseless smok check, it's a very good idea for many reason. THe best reason, I notice at least 3 cars a day that blast out dark smoke and the other reason is I can easily smell a car close buy that has poor emisions. It also preserves are environment which produces air that you breathe. Unless you cant you childrens childrens to have to pay for this later, the smog check is a very reasonable idea. Also, they arent going to spot out you, if they do its just cause they are dicks and are jealous of your ride, the are trying to get the beaters off the road. HiT-TheNos420 10-08-2005, 04:42 AM another thing, i love this forum, but some off you have no idea how this country let alone this state works and make no sense. Im not qouting anyone on this. ted_ex 10-08-2005, 08:42 AM Don't be naive. Who do you think is driving those "beaters"? People who can't afford a better car. So poor people shouldn't be able to drive? Or maybe you could buy them a newer car. The problem with laws like this is they can pull a car over whenever they want to "test" it. It's profiling. The biggest source of pollution is power plants and manufacturing. If a government was serious about reducing emmisions they would have stricter laws on plant emissions. Not the clean air act joke that fuck-stick put into law. Or require new cars to come equipped with better emissions control. I can assure you that setting up a couple of smog check points won't make enough of a difference to save the planet for our childrens children. -Josh- 10-08-2005, 09:15 AM Dang, bringing back a month old thread and insulting the members all at once.
