Knocking when slowing

Hello,
I have a 2000 Mazda 626 v6. The car is good shape 71k miles and I have an intermited problem of a knocking noise when slowing. Usually it is from about 30 miles an hour and slower to a stop. I think it is from the rear right side, but can't be sure because sounds tend to travel in strange ways. The knocking is doesn't change speed or volume when it does happen. Also, when stopped for about 1-2 secs the knocking will stop. I thought it might be a speedometer cable cause I had a VW bug that did it. Any suggestions.
Thanks, Michael
