2002 Tracker Help

I bought a used 2002 Tracker 4-door 2.0L 5-speed. My daily commute to work is on a very curvy, hilly road. Just in the past few days, I've notice what sounds like a metal to metal scraping noise that starts when I curve to the right. When I curve to the left, it stops. I know "metal to metal" is associated with brakes. I'm not using the brakes when this noise starts/stops. It does need brakes/rotors. My husband was going to replace them, but after getting in to it, he decided it was too involved and didn't want to chance messing up anything. He put new pads on just to get me by until we could get it done. Now they are squealing. Any ideas?

Re: 2002 Tracker

The 'guarenteed for life' type pads will often squeal, just because they're such a hard material. Alternatively, shims may have been required. I'm an avid backyard mechanic myself, but I usually take my car to a real mechanic when brakes are involved. Nothing else really matters in a vehicle when the ability to stop is compromised.
