I just replace the stock air filter on my 1998 grand prix gt with a cone air filter, aluminum pipe, from procarparts.com. The engine light did come on but I had autozone look at it and they said it was the sensor that I had disconnected. I reconnected it and the light did go off. Is this type of air filter ok for my car?

I have done the same thing with my 98 GT and the SES light came on but went off after the next 100 miles came around ( resetting the computer ) . The K&N people call these filters 1,000,000 mile filters but what they dont tell you is that they have to be cleaned or recharged every 6 months and a recharge kit is more money down the road. I can't say how much they are as I have not looked up the price but i believe its around 10-15 bucks.

These filters are good for performance but they do have one flaw, not when new but when they are oiled after cleaning. You must be very careful not to over oil the filter. Too much oil will contaminate the Mass air flow sensor causing a CEL to come on. Some of the manufacturers are even refusing to warrant the MAF sensors if one of these filters is used.

Thanks for the info. So in 6 months I should have a mechanic clean the cone filter. I didn't know that oil was suppose to go in here. I just put it on and that was it. I'm not sure I understand what you mean. I always thought that the cone filter was just replaced with a new one after awhile. Did not know anything about oil. Could you please explain.

Also, the filter that I bought was not K & N. It was from Procarparts.com which states that theirs are made just like brand names but without the name.

I bought my K&N off of e-bay. It was the cone style but it came with a cusom made pipe for the GP GT 97-03. Just instruction on installing. NONE on the required maintenance on the filter. So I am looking for more info myself. All I have found so far is that after cleaning you have to spray it LIGHTY with "oil". I am not sure if this is formulated oil specifically for K&N air filters.

The K&N filter oil works with all cotton/metal gauze and foam style air filters. Other companies make similar oils like Amsoil, Castrol, Uni and S&B. They are basically the same. The oil is special due it high tack qualitiies.

I've even used Honda motorcycle brand aerosol air filter oil. It's probably the best there is.
