Lightbulb New Beetle STRAIGHT PIPES! NEED OPINIONS!

Hey,
I have recently purchased a 98 VW beetle with 103,000miles. Its a 2.0 5 speed.
I want to spunk up the car a little bit. I have an appointment with an awesome muffler shop tomorrow so I need some quick feedback...
I am planning on getting 2.5 inch pipe from the cat (stock), and no muffler. Im thinking about a Euro oval style tip.

What're you guys' opinions on having a 2.5inch pipe from the stock cat with no muffler?
Would it be terribly loud? Civic obnoxtious?
Is it safe?

Thanks a lot, hopefully someone will reply before tomorrow!!
Thanks again!

if the muffler shop didn't help with your dilemma;
I think a little research would be prudent.
2-1/2" is a large diameter for a four cylinder, and straight pipe to boot?!?
2" or less is probably more than adequate, and possibly look into something like a Pacesetter monza muffler or tip, or at least a Dynomax glasspack to resonate and diffuse the noise;
your profile says Atlanta, and many city ordinances have decibel limits or laws, so it would be better to err on the side of caution and have a raspy noise than the sweetness of open pipe, especially if it meant:
exactly what your icon shows: cop car jumping up German car's butt.

if you need part numbers for the VW Pacestter of Walker/Dynomax perfomance tips or monza mufflers, pm me.

hope this helps,
chris
