crankshaft sensor

Have posted to this board a few times in regards to my 95 Cavalier that likes to cough and sputter at most any speed, often conking out entirely. Afterwards, it usually takes quite a while to get started again.

Managed to get it to Advanced Auto and had it scanned where they got back a reading saying there was a crankshaft sensor error.

For starters, does anyone know where the crankshaft sensor is on a 2.2 95 Chevy Cavalier? Haynes and Chilton was no help.

Secondly, what exactly is this error telling me? Don't have much experience with error codes. Is this saying that the crankshaft sensor is defunct or is is telling me that something is wrong in this general area of the car? Anyone have any experience with this particular error?

Re: crankshaft sensor

The 2.2 crank sensor is mounted low on the back side of the block, above the oil pan.It is held down by a bolt on clamp, and can be absolutely impossible to remove at times. It has a long "neck" that goes thru the block all the way and it can freeze into the block.Just tripping a Crank Sensor code doesnt mean its at fault....could be wiring or a bad plug in too.....
