98' 3 fuel pump failures in 4 weeks

my wife has a 2wd 98 tahoe with a vortec 350. We have owned it for about 2 years. No problems untill about a month ago. Fuel pump went out. replaced it with a unit from carquest, which went out in 2 weeks. replaced again and went out in 2 weeks. any idea what would cause the pumps lifes to be so short? I was lightly rearended about 1 week before the 1st pump went out. I dont think it would have anything to do with it, but not sure. I checked the harness the last time it was out and didnt find any problems. the 1st replacement I also replaced the fuel filter.
thanks for any help

It might not be the pump that is your problem.
I would do a voltage drop across the ground circuit of the fuel pump, you may find you have a bad ground.

MY 98 Tahoe's fuel pump started "screaming" today. Since you've replaced 3 of them, maybe you can help. Does the tank need to be dropped to replace the pump??? One thing I noticed when I was shopping online for my pump is the different types of pumps for the same vehicle for example with/without low lubricity fuel sender, with/without robust fuel system sender, with/without RFI filter. There is also a harness for about $18 that they claim you need to replace " due to electrical requirements". Possibly this could be why your pumpisn't lasting ???/

Yes, you do need to drop the tank. I ended up taking the 1st pump out, and took it to the parts store with me to "match up" the pumps. I have no idea how you tell exactly which system you have. The rapair manual I have doesnt say anything about replacing the harness. Definately looking into that before I put a new pump in this time.
