Fuel guage goofy

When I installed a new fuel pump, I bumped the float off of the assembly. I re-snapped it into place and flipped it up and down to check it for proper movement before putting the tank back up.

Good news is the Delphi brand pump works great, the goofy thing is the fuel guage read 3/4 tank when there was only 1/4 in it. After putting about 1/2 tank of gas in it it read nearly full. After driving it a day or two it read over the full mark.

Does anyone have an idea of what may be wrong? Did I pinch a wire, did I install the float wrong, did I ruin my sending unit?
