4l60e-no 2-3 upshift...HELP!!!
Hi All,
My 1st post. I'll try to keep it short. I have a '96 Chev. Silverado with transmission problems. The problem started with a dirty filter. I changed the filter and all was well....for about a week. Now the transmission will shift from 1st to 2nd fine but seems to go into neutral at 3rd. Shifts the same whether in drive or if I shift manually. I'm pretty sure that the filter change had something to do with the present problem as the timing was too coincidental. I would hate to take it in for a swap or rebuild if the problem is something fairly simple that I could handle myself. Any help will be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Robert

My 95 Grand-Am tranny is sort of doing the same thing. Only I HAVE to shift manually. If I put it in drive, it stays in Neutral. Whenever the car downshifts, it goes into Neutral. It seems that every time the car tries to shift on it's own, it slips out. Tranny was just serviced 3 mths ago (oil, filter, etc.), and I've overfilled the tranny 1 litre past full.
In another thread, I read to pull the sensor plug on the Transmisson itself. I pulled the plug, and now the car goes into gear when I put it in Drive. However, it seems "weak" almost like it's starting in 3rd gear. I was afraid to take it for a "drive" as I didn't want to break anything. I just did about 20km/hr in the parking lot, and didn't try shifting manually while this thing was unplugged.

i had the same problem with my 700r4, i had replaced the motor and a couple weeks later i lost 3rd gear, i had 1st and 2nd fine and then when it shifted into 3rd it kept slippin (like being in neutral) well i figured out the problem and it was because my 3rd gear clutch burned up, now i cant be certain thats wuts wrong with urs but its an idea right?

Re: 4l60e
3rd in a 700r4 is a planetary gear i believe.

Re: 4l60e
700r4 and 4l60e and the same with respect to the internal components. Of course, the 4l60e is electronically controlled.
The difference between 3rd and 4th in a 700r4/4060e is that in 3rd the sun shell is not stopped by the 2-4 band. In 4th, the band is activated by the servo and the sun shell is stopped.
The 3/4 clutches are applied in both 3rd and 4th.
No 3rd can be caused by the 3/4 clutches being burned, a bad servo (not releasing the 2-4 band), or a valve body issue.

4l60e
Thanks for the replies. Well, after tinkering for a few days I finally broke down and took it to the transmission shop. Seems that all that was needed to fix my problem was to simply replace everything in the transmission......ouch!!!..... I hate being strapped over a barrel and being taken advantage of like that but I guess that's the price of ignorance. Since I got it back the transmission works fine but the engine runs like cr@p. Is there anything done durring a transmission job that could cause the engine to misfire???? A new fuel filter, distributor, rotor, plugs and plug wires haven't fixed the problem.

Re: 4l60e
If they removed or moved the dist, then you need a scan tool to reset the timing (or take it to someone that has a scan tool).
