84 impala base engine.,. 3.8L ?randy78 08-09-2005, 08:06 PM hey all i just picked up a good running 84 impala i guess it has the 3.8L Olds v-6 in it ?? the base engine through 84 in these cars ? measly 110hp ? is this true ? tell me about the engine, reliability, issues, known problems to repair ? this one has a billion miles on it but it runs good, heck, in 1986 it already had 68,000 miles on it according to the title a salesman drove it when it was new, i was told, thanks randy78 08-10-2005, 02:19 PM this one is noticeably faster than my 88 caprice with the 305 the impala is 3.8 and thm250c and 2.73 axle the 88 is 305 and 700r4 and 2.56 the caprice is a slow pig compared to this impala good 3.8L engine, ive never owned a 3.8 RWD before, im pleasantly surprised! :D its gonna be a great winter beater :D may end up selling/trading the caprice off now Pat_OD 08-10-2005, 03:59 PM i was under the impression that the 2000-2005 impalas were the only ones to have a 6 cylinder in them. randy78 08-13-2005, 03:14 AM oops it is chevy 3.8 L lol 229ci distributor in rear, 90 degree block and bellhousing both dang.. Torcque 08-20-2005, 09:28 AM Good find. My 85 Impala has a GM 350 swapped in but beware. I ran a car fax report after having it for a month and discovered that mine had at least 5 odometer rollbacks.
