Angry evil intermittent electrical problem

Hi this is my first post

I have a1988 mk2 golf GTI 5 door 1.8 8V...great car! however it seems to have developed awied sporadic electrical problem that I would like some suggestions on.

new coil fitted so its not that.

when driving allong the revs will suddenly drop and sometims pop up again.... but sometimes not..then I have to coast to the side of the road and call green flag.

when it is out it will turn over, I can smell petrol froim the engine but it wont start or it will just catch then drop.

when green flag have towed it home often the next morning it will start first time again.

seems to be no rhyme or reason to it.

Loose connection, dodgy immobiliser, ECU I have no idea

any suggestions?
