1998 Cavalier air bags deployed, what needs to be replaced?

from the limited amount of information i can find on the net, it seems the air bag system is comprised of the two bags and the control module.. is this all that needs to be replace after a crash!?!?

are there any other sensors or anything that need to be replaced?

crashed my car and need to repair it on my own, if possible, as much as possible, because of the costs involved... need to get the air bags replaced for starters

also, anyone have any specific information/instructions on replacing the airbag system to a working state!!? theres barely any information out there on replacing airbags on your own .. i guess they really dont want you doing that on your own

thanks

Re: 1998 Cavalier air bags deployed, what needs to be replaced?

LOL i crashed my hubbies 1996 we cut them out and repaired the horn (needs to blow to get it streeet legal in AZ) Then my husband took ELectrical tape and taped the steering wheel back together and took a screw and screwed the dash flap back in place ....replaced the windshield and he drives it 100 miles every other day !!! the air bg light stays on, but heck the little fender bender I was in WHO NEEDS AIR BAGS if it werent for the air bag there would have only been minimal damage to the front end and I wouldnt have got hurt! (air bag burns SUCK!)

But I guess in a big accident they could be useful lets hope we dont go there.

Hope this helps.

glad your safe

Re: 1998 Cavalier air bags deployed, what needs to be replaced?

well from as far as i can tell with the legal mumbo jumbo that ive been able to read in the department of transportation laws, airbags are required for newer model cars ..... therefore having my bags blown out (and then removed) will not be legal, therefore not passing inspection.... plus would not pass inspection because of the air bag stuff in the computer

up here in MA they frown on not having a current inspection sticker, so its hard to get around not having the air bags functioning

fourtunately, i got air bags and a SDM from the junk yard today, hopefully the SDM is not damaged even though the car that i pulled it from did not have the bags deployed.

now all i need to do is get the hood, fender, bumper, and windshield.. and hope all is ok-- then get some service on it to at least reset the computer.... and hope my wallet didnt just break for no reason because-------

my car has been sitting in the same spot since the accident .. i started it up today (after a jump) and moved it a little, did not feel too good.. all the sitting there has been bad.. i hope that didnt cause more damage...

POS car needs to get me around for quite some time longer

How do you disable the bags? Can you just pull the fuse?

ya if you pull the fuse the airbags wont work anymore...its actually a step for removing your dash otherwise when you go to pull the dash off you could set them off and that wouldnt be good lol.
