Question Cavalier Blower Switch

I have a `97 Chev Cavalier RS with a/c. The knob that adjusts the blower speed of the heater/air fan has four positions. I'm assuming they are "Off, Low, Medium and High". The fan blows great when set on the Medium and High positions but there is no difference between the Off and the Low positions..... the air does not blow at all.

Could there possibly be a different fuse or something that controls the Low fan speed? That sounds highly unlikely. I don't think it's a vacuum problem because the fan control should be electric. Could the switch be bad? If so, does the whole dash have to be disassembled to replace it?

Any help would be appreciated.

Re: Cavalier Blower Switch

It's probably your blower motor resistor, seems to be a common problem with these cars. It's located underneath the glovebox right against the firewall. It's a bitch to change but at least you don't have to rip your whole dash apart.

The part will run you about $15 at Autozone.

Thanks SlyBry! That was the problem. Wasn't too bad except for removing the screw closest to the firewall. I think GM put that second screw there just to make things difficult. I replaced the resistor, (minus the front screw), and it works great!

Thanks again!

yup... common problem with GM... they are quite the bastard to get... a 6.5mm bolt? the best is to get a universal joint in there along with a nice size extension (1/4 drive)
