97 Lumina fuel issues

I have a 97 Lumina 3.1 V6, a year or so ago we noticed a moaning or whining sound coming from the rear of the car, even while in park, and idling. We thought that the fuel pump was going out, we continued to drive it, just not as often, it seemed that at first we didn't hear the noise until after it warmed up. We basically quit driving the Lumina, while trying to gather the money to take it to the shop, we would start it once or twice a week and let it run, just to get things circulated, and drive it occasionally around town. It still runs extremely well and shows no signs of anything wrong, until a month or so ago. I went to start it and it started up, but then died pretty much right away, and will not restart, I try it pretty much everyday, and it will initially start, but when I try and give it gas, it will die, and won't start. I have a guy going to come over and try and help me get it going next week, and looking for suggestions to try. Thanks

pump could be going out
try by passing the pump relay
to keep pump running
see if car runs any better
you should here the pump it may get louder if its going out
could be a injection problem too or pressure regulator
and or fuel filter is plugged up

need to test fuel pressure with a gauge
