I have a 2001 LS Extended cab with a 5.3, It is Bone Stock, no MODS.

I have been seeing these K&N intake kits around the forums and on ebay. I was wondering if these increase gas mileage. I understand they may create a few HP (if any) but Im not looking for HP Increase, just better mileage.

WIll these make the computer screwy? Does the computer need to be reset or something like that? Please tell me what results you get from these. I dont have an aftermarket exhaust, so if anyone has just tried one of these kits on a stock motor, tell me what results you have.

Boy, the 4 headlight mod is REALLY easy and definitely worth the small amount of time and effort. I still have a stock air intake, so I know nothing of that. Here's a couple links to help you with the headlights:

I'm running a 4.3 with just a K&N filter. I looked at the FIPK kit, but the site I looked at showed a dyno run comparison, and there was really no power gain until up around 4,000 rpm. I don't run in that range, so I opted for just the filter in the stock airbox. I've used that on 2 previous vehicles, and found an average 10% gain in fuel mileage on all 3 vehicles. And I like the idea of having 1 air filter for the life of the vehicle. I clean the filter about once a year, and have been quite happy with it. No computer clunks, just make sure you don't soak it with too much oil. They come pre oiled, so just install it, and when you clean it, just follow the re-oiling instructions on the can.

Yeah, I had a K&N 14"X3" on my Ford 409CID but it shrank froma 14" to like a 12" over 3 years. But there was intense heat usually under the hood

**You really saw a 10% gain in mileage ?? Hy then don't manufacturers or states require these? 10% could significantly reduce our dependance on foreign oil LOL anyway, 10% is worth a minor thing such as airfilter upgrade.

I am running my first full tank to get a base mileage (just bought the truck) then I will pick up one of these K&N filters and see if I get 10% gain. I will post results on this thread.

Anyone else have good MPG results from K&N??

I just installed an FIPK on my '02, 5.3L, flowmaster dual ex. Superado last night and I think it's worth looking at from a different perspective. First, I deffinately feel a power boost, but more impotant than that is the feel of effeciency in the way that impresses me.
Now...let's say your nose is to your face what the intake is to your truck's engine. Your airway is partly blocked (some conjestion) and you simply use some nasel spray.. You've relieved some of the blockage and your head now operates better (new K&N to your standard intake). The intake is better, but is still partly blocked, let's say from a deviated septum (new filter, old box). You go and see your frindly ENT Doctor and he does surgery to fix the nasel passage to allow better air flow to your lungs. You feel better, think better and can do more physical activities due to a better Oxy flow (you now have FIPK for your honker). Air flow is more effecient, your miledge is better and you just plain function better...no brainer!! This will also be true of your truck!!!
A couple of things. Let those who have it and use it tell you how it works. Most, if not nearly all, would more than likely give you a positive report. Saving gas will have just as much (if not more) to do with how you drive your truck, especially if it feels "souped-up". If you improve the power and then drive crazy, your mpg will go down and not up. If your driving habits stay as good, or get even better, the miledge will improve and with a bit more power, you'll need less throtle to do what you need to do...EZ Doz It!!! (Don't know anything about the headlamp thingy???)
Now I only need $1920 more for all the other BS I want for my baby!!!
Goes to show you, oil is thicker than water!!!

Ok. I used to be heavy on the pedal, untill I blew a 400CID going 110MPH on a highway. The engine locked and the centrifugal force almost threw me into opposite lane!! I broke my camsahft in half.
I think I would rather have a zippy truck for years to come, so I drive a lot more like an old lady these days !! With the occasional opening on the highway to clear the injectors
Whay are these FIPK kits $200+? All it looks to me is a neck and a cone filter. Or am I looking at the wrong thing? WHat can I expect to pay for a genII FIPK?

I got mine on eBay for $198 new (factory sealed box) plus about $12 for shipping (most retail is about $260-$280). I think it's worth getting it. It's made to fit the vehicle. Chevy itself couldn't have made it more to fiit with the vehicle. EZ to install. When you buy something like this, you're just not paying for the research and developement to make this this work as right as rain. You can probably make your own kit, but... you get what you pay for. Doing it wrong could even make matters worse. I might add it also uses the factory mass air intake sensor, also nice...no compromises!! And yes, the truck will deffinately be "Zippy"!!! Good Luck!!! http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbulletin/#
