98 Toyota Timing belt install problemNammtoyo98 08-01-2005, 06:29 PM I started to install a new timing belt at 150000 miles and it was changed before but i wanted to be on the safe side. i got it all lined up and almost all put back together when i ran into a problem. i wanted to test the pressure in the number one cyilnder so i was manually turning the engine. then i came to a dead stop after turning it a few times. the pistion is toward the top. our first thought was that it hit a value so we took of the value cover and checked that they were closed and they were. so we took it all apart and took off the belt again and have tried to figure out what it his hitting when it comes to the top. we also cant get it back to 0 or 10 degrees TDC. because it hits before it reaches thoughs marks. If anyone has any suggestions feel free to let me know im out of options. thanks Brian R. 08-02-2005, 12:34 AM Can't be the valve/piston contact. That is a free-running engine and incorrect valve timing won't cause contact. May be a stray bolt/nut/pin/etc. stuck behind a pully or under a cam lobe, or in the cam gears where it's hard to see. Is is possible you dropped something in the #1 cylinder when you pulled the plug? Did you replace anything else besides the belt? I would remove/loosen the belt and turn each of the cams and the crank (plugs out) individually and see where the lock-up occurs. Since it locked up after a few revolutions, it is not a fixed stop, it is something that fell or got pulled into place (something loose). Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
