The first time I replaced the fuel pump on my '96 Tahoe, it was under an extended warranry, so I had to take it to the dealership. They charged a little over $1000 parts and labor. The next one I changed myself and it cost me $300, only because I broke the sending unit. Otherwise it would have been around $130 for just the pump.0

These prices were between 2 and 4 years ago. The pump that the dealership put in had to be pulled because it was leaking gas, they said the sending unit was broken. Then I did the next one myself, this time the pump was pumping, just not enough pressure. Just my luck (can't you see how good my luck is) the pump I put in had a malfunction at the power connector. It had gotten hot enough that the hard plastic connector had melted.

Re: Fuel Pump

$1000 thats not good! I replaced the fuel pump in my 95 Mustang Gt and it was $250 parts and labor. And i replaced it with a 190 lph pump instead of the stock 155 lph. I am really starting to question my choice to trade my Stang for this Tahoe!Seeing as these truck like to go through fuel pumps, intake gaskets, trannies, altenators etc!

To spend that much money and i don't even know if thats the problem is insane! The truck starts fine put stumbles and hesitates when you take off hard or even if the truck is in park and you try and rev it hard it is very rough off idle right when you hit the gas for a quick moment! I even hear some popping from the exhaust when this is taking place! This sure does suck!

If you are just looking to replace the pump and not the whole fuel pump/sensor assembly, you're looking at $100-150 for the pump and a little over 2 hours of labor.

I have a 96 Yukon with 111000 miles and just replaced the fuel pump only. I used a local mechanic who charged $70 and hour. The pump was around $100-120 with no more than 2.5 hours of labor.

Going to a dealer may be a little more. My local GMC dealer is $89 an hour for labor.

Hope this helps.

Re: Fuel Pump

$1000 does seem rather high. I would expect something around $600 at the most. Give your dealer a call and get an estimate. If they tell you $1000, tell them to go get F#&CKED!!!

I apologize for that rather high figure. I now remember that the amount that the extended warranty company was supposed to re-imburse me was around $1000. That included rental car, tow, parts and labor. By the way, they talked me into spending $60 to replace the fuel filter (I know, what a sucker)even worse, they didn't even change it.
