Radio Backlights

There are some buttons on my 01 Silverado's radio that aren't lit up anymore. How much trouble is it to remedy this problem, and any how to would be appreciated?

Thanks in advance

I'm not certain, but it would make sense that they aren't bulbs at all... more likely LEDs. (smaller, less power consuption, longer lasting(yeah right))

I have the backlighting for my voltmeter on the cluster out, and also the auto indicator on my air bag switch is very dim in my 03 silvy..

Bugs the hell out of me, just cuz i get bugged by things like that...
does anybody know for sure if these are bulbs or LEDs?

I put a "Theftlock" type radio in my '99 K2500, and had lighting failures. Pulled the radio and gently popped the faceplate off. That one has bulbs. You can find a useable replacement at Radioshack.

I went to a dealer first, to look for bulbs. At that time I was informed of a program they had running in which you bring in your defective radio (bad bulbs) and in about a week you would have another fully functional unit. I think the service was about $75.00. The replacement unit was supposed have been fully serviced, cleaned etc., and in 100% operating condition. You may want to check on this.

I would not suggest trying to replace the bulbs unless you have some background in electronic desoldering/soldering. You could easily damage the pc board.

Re: Radio Backlights

In the winter when I get some more time off I'm going to pull mine. I will take lots of pics of how I did and any success I have. I'm going to try and replace them all with LEDS as the entire left hand side of my buttons are all burnt out.

$75 is a bit pricy to have your unit cleaned and new lights put in. For that you could put it towards a decent MP3 player for the truck. Just my .

Re: Radio Backlights

hey guys, just thought id let you know, and hopefully someone can help me out also, over a year ago, i had the radio replaced in my 06 2500hd under warranty just 5 and 6 light buttons were out, now after the vehicle is out of warranty, the clock/info display quit working and then after a 3 day weekend getaway, left my silvy sit, and returned to a dead battery. been noticing in the mornings, mt radio backlights are on until i open the door. anyone else out there have this problem? or know what to do? would have rather had the old radio with a few buttons not lit up than the problems with this one!
