2005 Trailblazer LS w/ Bose and 6 disc.....thought it can play MP3's
Hey all, new to the forum. I just leased a 2005 Trailblazer LS with sun/entertaiment package, also have running boards on her if your curious. It came with the in dash 6 disc cd changer w/ XM. I thought this head unit was able to play MP3's. I put an MP3 cd in and it did not play, was locked on "track 1" and no sound. Am I mistaken in thinking this? Thanks alot...if I was wrong, anyway to mod this head unit to play MP3's?

i just bought an '05 EXT LT w/ Bose head unit/premium sound and it does not play mp3 format. i would assume if it did, the HU would have the mp3 symbol on it.

Yes, the package you have will play MP3's. There is a program upgarde that your 05 may have missed.

I don't know about the older ones. Mine is an 05 with the Bose 6 CD changer. The literature with the car said it played MP3's. Mine did not. When I took it in for its first oil change I asked about the MP3 capability. The advisor said they would check it out. When I got the car back they preformed some sort of software upgrade and now I can listen to MP3's. Great!

Call your dealer and ask? If you provide the VIN number, they should be able to look it up.

No MP3 logo on my Bose head unit. However there is no MP3 logo on my Creative Zen MP3 player. So I am not sure it is like the "compact disc" logo, which by today's standards, is not so compact.

Stan, after the upgrade do your MP3 cds show the MP3 tags? Like the Artist - Song title, or does it just show like Track 1 etc?

It's not. There is no "official" MP3 logo that universally identifies MP3-compliant audio equipment. Unlike Dolby and the CD standard, which were developed and licensed by commercial entities, the MP3 standard was developed and published by the MPEG standards committee. People just started using it to compress and digitally transmit (including illegally download) audio files, so audio equipment makers started making CD players that could read and play it. Various companies have devised their own MP3 logos and display them on their equipment to advertise that they are MP3-compatible, but that is for marketing, it is not required by a technology license, like say the Dolby logo is.
The laser doesn't care what format your data is in; it just reads bits off the disc. Players that do the audio reconstruction in software on a fast processor or DSP, can often be made to read MP3s with a software upgrade (if they have enough memory to do the buffering). Those that pump the bits to dedicated chips that can only restore audio according to the CD format, can't.

So this could be legit. This software upgrade will enable mp3 cd playback? Can anyone else confirm this?
