Alright, i'm gonna ask this question (God help me) as something informational in buying a vehicle. Please keep the flaming to a minimum.
Thanks
Now i'm looking for a car/truck that would be fairly good on gas and run well enough to get out of it's own way. I don't care for most of the newer cars on the market and to be honest, I can't work on them. I'm looking at older (1985-1970) cars/trucks. I have owned a 1970 Gremlin w/258 6cyl and a 1977 Mavrick w/6 cyl (250?) and a 1986 Dodge Challenger w/a 2.9 6cyl and all three were fun, got decent milage and ran pretty well. What are some other options??

GO!!!

1980+ camaro v6?....or you could get one of those old deisel volkswagens hehe, nothing like 55hp under the hoods to make you realize you're doing this for gas milage....

Camaro V-6 might be an option but this isn't just for gas milage. There are a few people around here that race so I need something that can be made fairly quick. But still get 20+ mpg.

Of course a Honduh. Seriously man, get a like a 4th gen (88-91) hatch. It can be found for well under $2500, and they're not too bad to work on, especially if you have a manual for it. Plus 40+ mpg.

How 'bout a 74-78 Mustang II? 302 v-8 might not get you 20mpg, but they were made during the so-called "gas shortage". All American cars made in that time frame were "de-tuned" so they got slightly better mileage...and because they're so small they can be made FAST with just a 4bbl carb and headers...a nice Holley 650 on top of an Edelbrock and some Hooker Super Comps damn I miss the old days. I've seen a few for under $2000. I think they even called them Cobras.

'75 Mustang Cobra II

302 V8 134 bhp @ 3600 rpm, 247 lb-ft @ 1800.
Performance: 302 V8: 0-60 in 10.5 seconds, 1/4 mile in 17.9 seconds @ 77 mph.

It's so ugly it's cool.

You have gotta be kidding me. A 302 V8 only making 134 hp. I understand that it's detuned, but it's still hillarious. See how much technology has improved? Nowdays 2.0 Honda engines make 240 hp from the factory.

Yes, but that was back in 1975. Back then... that was still considered 'good'. Especially since every V8 car company took a hit in performance after about 12 years of building monsterly fast cars then being told "Hey, your fast motors don't pass emissions... fix it" Easiest way was to clog them up with smog canisters and restrictive intake and exhaust systems.

For the time being... dropping Carbs and going to EFI was a huge jump in performance/efficiency and of course cleanlyness.

And don't forget back then, Honda was making 68hp with it's 1500cc CVCC car. Not exactly an impressive number, but they did get 50+mpg. My family had a bunch wayyy back when. Cool cars. If I could find one, I'd buy one... so cool.

Basically a motorcycle motor in a car... No really, it is.

well if you're lucky enough to get a good deal like me, you could try and get an 80's zx turbo, they come with 200 horse 227 TQ, and I get at least 20+ MPG on the highway. Plus it's RWD :D and it's turbo'd. Most are about $3,000 but I got mine for $2,000... What about a first gen DSM????

Believe it or not, I had a '75. It was red and white with a 4 banger. The front end kept falling out on it. It had to be the ugliest mustang ever.I think i'm gonna try to find a Gremlin and fix it up. Those old 258 inline 6's were pretty strong. I've also got a 360 with a four bbl and shorty headers I could shoe-horn into it. :iceslolan

I'm going for different. I don't really care for the look of the Eclipse or Supra's. I like things I can work on easily. I know jack about foreign cars. How embaressing would it be to get smoked by a car that looks like a doorstop on wheels and has Gizmo laughing at you as you get passed.http://files.automotiveforums.com/gallery/watermark.php?file=/501/287300gremlin.jpg

OH HELL NO. I had a '77 Pinto Sport. That is two words that should never be in the same sentence. That car was a royal POS and I wouldn't have another if I was paid to drive it.
