A/C question

R134-A system

I guess this is the time of year for a/c questions, and I have one :)

I am not sure which approach to take on repairing my a/c unit. The a/c compressor ran in 4-5 second cycles and cooled ok, it operated that way for some time. Recently I turned on the a/c and it did not cool at all. The compressor still tries to operate in short cycles. Does this sound like a compressor on the way out or a need of freon? If it has leaked freon it got out within a 7 day period.........

Any help appreciated.

I'm guessing here. Compressor is probably OK. System is likely overcharged or undercharged. Wait for input from others.

Are you saying that you had it charged and it stopped working 7 days later, or that it was 7 days between you noticing when it worked and when it stopped working? If it was just 7 days between working and not it could just be that the pressure finally dropped low enough and needs recharged and not necessarily a leak that all of a sudden dumped all your freon in 7 days.

It was 7 days between me noticing when it worked and when it stopped working. I did not know freon could escape so fast. Unit has probably been low for some time.

I will try the 134-a kits with a gage attached. Someone said the freon kits have good instructions inside.

Your friendly Wal Mart store sells a R-134a kit with freon and a gauge. The can of freon has refrigerant, stop leak, oil charge, leak finder, o-ring conditioner. It says to connect to the low side of unit and hold the can upside down. It even shows a picture of it. Anyone agree with that process?

Hello there,

I have had to recharg my Camry '94 AC unit few times this year and last time I put some sealant to it.
Usually I have had to refill once a month.
If you go to walmart or k-mart stores you can buy whole kit for about $30-$40, after that you can buy only a can of freon to recharge your unit if it leaks again.

Hope this help.
