3.9L Backfiring problemA_BRO 07-23-2005, 10:17 PM I have a '92 Dakota Sport with the 3.9L Magnum V6 and 5 spd stick. At around 1800-2000 rpm the engine will cut out and backfire. I have put a new cap, rotor, plugs, wires, and coil trying to solve the problem. I am totally stumped. I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas about what else the problem could be. Any thoughts are appreciated, thanks. Gizmokid2005 07-25-2005, 03:17 PM Make sure that you are getting enough fuel to the motor, you might have a bad fuel pump, your filter might be plugged, you might need to get your injectors cleaned. A_BRO 07-27-2005, 09:43 PM Thanks for the suggestion, I checked it out and I am getting fuel. I just can't figure out the problem. If anyone has any other possibilities I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks waltham41 07-31-2005, 04:26 PM Are you sure you are getting enough fuel? A partially clogged fuel filter or a fuel pump that is going bad will let you get some fuel but not enough to feed the motor at higher rpm's. Just a thought. theFREAKnasty82 08-01-2005, 02:30 AM Have you had a new distributor put in? Make sure you ignition timing isn't too retarded that it's causing the backfire. chrishking 08-01-2005, 10:15 PM My truck was running like crap last year. ('95 3.9 auto) Everything checked out OK. No codes on the ECM. From previous experience and suspicion I changed the O2 sensor. Runs great now! A_BRO 08-04-2005, 10:19 PM Thanks for all of the ideas but I decided to give up on trying to fix my truck myself. I need the truck to run well because it is the only transportation I have. I'll be sure to let everyone know what the problem is when/if I ever find out. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
