Celica vs Corvette
I was leaving work, on my way to meet up with a friend. Driving down a four lane road, I notice an older Corvette (was probably '88-92) turning into the lane next to me. He accelerated quickly and passed by me.. then slowed down.. I knew then he probably wanted to race.
We rode side by side for a couple miles cruising at 60-65mph, with him speeding up and slowing down.. just toying with me. So I downshift to 4th at about 65mph (far out of my powerband) and start to accelerate to see if he will go. Sure enough, I hear him floor it.. I immediately downshifted to 3rd at 70mph (my sweet spot at 7200rpms). Almost instantly he stops pulling on me and we are staying dead even. As I was nearing the top of third gear at 8400rpms I had started to slowly pull on him.. his front tire was right beside my door. I shifted to 4th at 90mph and continued to pull up to a car length on him until we both shut down at around 105mph.
The guy in the Corvette had slowed down to the speed limit and fell back into traffic. At the next red light.. he was coming up next to me (I was hoping to get to talk to him) but he immediately made a U-turn and headed back the way we came.
FYI: My car is stock, with the exception of a short shifter.

I think he eventually would have started to pull on me.. but I think gearing was to my advantage at those speeds as I'm sure he was auto.
I think that model vette has 245hp, 345tq, 3223lbs.
My stats are 180hp, 130tq, 2500lbs.
65hp difference, but it also weighs 700+lbs more.

Re: Celica vs Corvette
Yeah, those early C4 vettes kinda sucked for a sports car, but definitely a worthy kill.

Re: Celica vs Corvette
They were fine for their time... not many 'super' fast cars came out of the 80s.
You had to spend big bucks for a fast car out of the 80s, like a Ferrari or Lamborghini.
Factor in age... and the fact that he was probably an automatic which do suck from a roll. It's plausible that you'd get him. From a roll power to weight doesn't have as a of an effect on the outcome of a race.
Although, every bit does count..

did the 80's have a restricted oil supply and tougher emissions which zapped alot of cars power?

Sometime mid to late 70s the new emissions laws came in and all the good cars had to tone it back. It was the end of the muscle car, and even the survivors (corvettes mustangs camaros) sucked. It took a long time for them to adapt the motors to produce any real power. It wasn't till the late 80s that a mustang or camaro would see 14s again really. It effected all cars too but I guess it was for the better, they had to find more efficiend motors for the cars and look how much better they are today.

Grand National was the only thing worth a damn to come out of the 80's in my opinion.

Yeah that and the select few other cars that shared the motor, I think the 89 Trans am had it (not all of them but there were a few with that motor) And that truck with the 3.8T. Awesome cars, I always wonder why they dumped that motor, I would rather that motor than most of the other stuff out there now actually. On top of that I was always partial to the 87+ foxbody mustangs. They were definately a success story anyway.

I just did some research and found some magazine tests for the C4 '84-'88.
Road & Track magazine tested the 1984 Corvette to a best time of 7.1 seconds 0-60mph, 15.5 sec @ 88.0 mph 1/4, and a top speed of 137 mph. Braking from 60-0 mph was 112ft.
Road & Track magazine tested the 1985 Corvette to a best time of 5.5 seconds 0-60mph, 14.8 sec @ 98.5 mph 1/4, and a top speed of 154 mph. Car & Driver magazine tested the 1985 to a 14.4 sec @ 95 mph 1/4 for a manualised version and a stonkin' 14.1 sec @ 97 mph for the auto. 0 - 60 mph times were 6.0s and 5.7s respectively.
Road & Track magazine tested the 1986 Corvette to a best time of 5.8 seconds 0-60mph, 14.4 sec @ 96.0 mph 1/4, and a top speed of 154 mph. They also tested a Callaway twin turbo of which recorded 0-60mph in 5.0 secs, 1/4 mile in 13.7 secs @ 104 mph. Car & Driver magazine achieved 6.0 sec to 60mph and a 1/4 mile result of 14.5 sec @ 95 mph. (test conducted on convertible)
Road & Track magazine tested the 1987 Corvette to a best time of 6.3 seconds 0-60mph, 14.8 sec @ 95.0 mph 1/4.
Road & Track test results for 1988: 0-60mph in 6.0 secs, 1/4 mile in 14.6 secs @ 95.5 mph.
