Hatchbacks - Any Recommendations?
Hi,
For some reason I really like the styling of the hatchbacks so I'm looking at a hatchback right now. I would like one that can be made into a low 14 second car to high 13 seconds car, gets decent gas mileage (Anything above 20) and is reliable. I know most hatchbacks probably fit my requirements but what are the ones that exceed?

Easy. Get a Civic, and do a swap. A b16 with boltons will definetely run low 14s, high 13s. It will also get above 30 mpg.

Nah, H22. Just as reliable, requires no bolt ons for what you are looking for, although with some cams, intake, and headers, you'll be looking at mid 13's easy. Gas mileage will definitely be above 20 no prob.

Yeah, but H22's aren't exactly light. And don't you have to modifiy some shit to get it to fit?
I don't know the specifics.

Nothing too fancy. Just the motor mounts are what you have to adjust. True they are heavy, but hey, TORQUE!! That's the best part about them.
Although they do sit awkwardly in the engine bay. So really, if you are looking for straightline performance, than the H22 would be your best bet. Otherwise, if you want something for autoX and straightline, then go with a GSR motor (B18C1)

Awesome thanks guys. Do you guys recommend any years or specific models? Also, how much do those motors cost and how much do you think it would be to pay someone to do it?
Finally, could I also swap those motors into a CRX? That's the other car that I'm thinking about getting...

You very well can swap each one of those motors into a CRX. Although, I would recommend the 92-95 or 5th Gen Civics for those swaps. The B16 and B18 motors will drop directly into the engine bays of those motors. I'm pretty sure the same is for the CRX. As for the H22, as stated there will be some adjustments that will need to be made. But to each his own.

negative on 4th gens h22s are like fucking hell to stuff in. B motors take a mount kit and little wiring depending on trim may just be 3 wires.
b16s bolt on 13s *wheezing from laughter* yea dude b16s arn't anything fancy mid 14s out of a 4/5 th gen 6th gens 15s wow yea thats worth 3K right....
hit me up with anything else.

I didn't say there wouldn't be any problems swapping the motors into the 4th Gens. That's why I recommended the 5th Gens. And yes, don't expect too much from the B16 swap. Although, if you plan on boosting, then the B16 is the healthier choice. But that's another deal.
Oh, as for the whole pricing thing. The B16 should run you about $1600 or so to purchase, and as for swapping it in, I don't know the price. A couple hundred dollars more for the B18C motor. And the H22, you will need to purchase motor mounts, axles, tranny. But it should run you about 3K, but it is oh so worth it for straightline performance.
As for the installing on each of those, it depends where you take it to. But if you have a garage and all the right tools, it is definitely worth your time and money to do it yourself.

never said you did just wanted to chime in about the 4th gens me knowing them better then most of you spoiled 5th genners and your big bays
why would you pick a b16 for boosting? GSR would walk it LS with b16 tranny would walk it i had a b16 it was peppy but hitting 4K just to get off at a stop light gets old fast. sure it would go ok with F/I but why not start with a better platform i know i regret the time and money i spent on that and my a6 compaired to my new set up

My bay is bigger than yours is
I was stating as far as boosting goes, the B16 compared to the B18C or the H22 is better for boosting. Now if you want to mix and match parts, then yes it will get very detailed. But each motor, stock for stock, the B16 is the wiser choice. Like I said, it's a whole other story.

You can basically do this to any Civic HB usually 88-00 and 02+ as well as CRXs 88-91. IMO the H22 kills the handling but will give you better straight line acceleration. Also if you have the deep pocket, look into a K20A engine (220 hp stock), but with boltons and cams it has put down close to 250 fwhp, and with bumping the compression close to 270 FWHP!!! That's all from a Naturally Aspirated 2.0 liter engine. The engine however usually costs more than $5k.
