Eurovan AC compressor dies

We've got a '93 Eurovan with the 2.5 5 cyl. The AC compressor has died.

To save money for the time being, can I just remove the compressor and replace with belt with one that is shorter. I understand that belt also runs the water pump or something. Not sure if anything else gets in the way of running a shorter belt.

Thanks for any help you can provide.
