Burnt/Black tranny fluid...

I have an 1996 4.3 Vortec/4L60e w/96K miles. Had the tranny fluid flushed abt 3 months ago. Now she sitting the driveway as I think the the tranny is blown.

Symptoms: The problem was progressive. Over these 3 months the truck was straining to go into first gear. I put her in OD, D, and 2 with the same problem (whinning and slowly goes into first gear).

Does this constitute a new/complete overhaul?

-If so, what should I have done as a "complete overhaul?"

-What enhancements should/could I make if I do the rebuild?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Burnt/Black tranny fluid...

Yep yep, get the pan dropped and a new filter installed too. Flushing does nothing for replacement of the filter which can be clogged with debris and whatnot over time. All new fluid also is rich in detergents and additives that usually keep a transmission clean. It probably blew some caked on crud out and clogged the filter when it was "shocked" with the all fresh liquid. Every two years I replace the filter in my GM vehicles and replace the fluid that was lost. I never had one succumb to mis-shifting in the period I owned them by doing this.

Re: Burnt/Black tranny fluid...

If it is black, chances are the tranny cooler and the oil cooler have somehow cracked allowing engine oil into the tranny fluid.

Notice oil consumption higher than normal? High tranny fluid level?

Unhappy

I didn't change the fluid. I stated I wanted to change the screen along with the flush. After Jiffy Lube completed the flush they told me they didn't have the ability to change the screen and that it was not necessary. Shucks! (!@#$%^&*)

Another lesson learned.

Is it tooooooo late to change the screen & fluid now?

Re: Burnt/Black tranny fluid...

If it were my truck, I'd sure give it a try... filters are cheap enough (less than $20 at autozone), and all it takes is dropping the pan to get to it. You might get lucky and have a perfectly functional transmission.

When they do the flush, they replace the tranny fluid completely hence flushing it.

But you ALWAYS change the filter after that.

I would go back to the shop and ask them why your tranny fluid is black so early.

Re: Burnt/Black tranny fluid...

I changed the fluid & screen this weekend. However, I'm having the same problem; slow to shift from 1st to 2nd gear.

- This being the case. Is it time for a new tranny? And if so, where is a good place (good price & warranty) to purchase one from.

Thanks in advance,

-TuBlaz

Re: Burnt/Black tranny fluid...

Is it like that when the engine is cold?

Re: Burnt/Black tranny fluid...

I've given in to the fact that it apprears I need a new tranny. Has anyone purchased a 4l60e 4x4 for the Blazer on via ebay? If so, where did you purchase it and how much?
