1990 240 SX hp?Dillweed 07-20-2001, 06:20 PM I'd like to know how much horse a 1990 has. I'd equally like to know if they ever made a turboed 240 SX. And if they did, what years did they make it? koh 07-21-2001, 01:58 AM in america the 1990 240sx has 140hp and there was never any turboed version released in america...datz why we suck Dillweed 07-21-2001, 11:45 PM Another one. How much horse does a 91 have. It's because my cousin talked to a Nissan Mech. and he supposedly said that a 240 SX had 160 hp. My cousin asked then what the difference was between the Stanza and the 240 SX since the Stanza only had 140hp and it's the same engine. He said it was injectors and intake from the factory. I'm glad I didn't believe him. koh 07-22-2001, 12:30 AM the 1991 240sx has 155hp, the mech prob rounded up or something...why dont you just get a 95 240sx and swap in a sr20det from japan, thats what everyone in america is doing recently Jay! 07-22-2001, 01:23 AM Originally posted by koh the 1991 240sx has 155hp, the mech prob rounded up or something...why dont you just get a 95 240sx and swap in a sr20det from japan, thats what everyone in america is doing recently I, for one, am thinking this over. But I think I'd prefer to get a '93 and swap in the SR engine and then get my hands on some later-year S13 body parts (taillights, Front valence, side skirts...) Can the S13 240SXs trade up to SR engines as easily as S14s? Dillweed 07-23-2001, 12:34 AM When you guys say SR20DET, is it the one with 203 hp like in the Bluebird or is it the SR20DET with 230 hp like in the Sentra SE-R, the Pulsar and the NX2000? koh 07-23-2001, 10:42 PM i am refering to the sr20det found in the japanese silvias (240sx)...and i have seen a lot of s13s with sr20dets, i even saw one with a rb Morpheus XIII 07-25-2001, 09:29 AM When you guys say SR20DET, is it the one with 203 hp like in the Bluebird or is it the SR20DET with 230 hp like in the Sentra SE-R, the Pulsar and the NX2000? --Dillweed The Bluebird's SR20DET is a transversely mounted engine with a front wheel-drive transmission, and therefore cannot be used in any 240SX. The U.S. Sentra SE-R, Pulsar, and NX2000 never received the factory turbocharger; they were powered by the ~140hp SR20DE (also transversely mounted). The only (and simplest) way to get the ~200-250hp longitudinally mounted SR20DET & transmission for U.S. 240SXs is to obtain them from J-spec S13-S15 Silvias. I, for one, am thinking this over. But I think I'd prefer to get a '93 and swap in the SR engine and then get my hands on some later-year S13 body parts (taillights, Front valence, side skirts...) Can the S13 240SXs trade up to SR engines as easily as S14s? --Silver S2000 Excellent choice! I'm pleased to see more and more S13s on the road fully updated to japanese market specifications. I also prefer the hatchbacks, but there are many sharply built coupes on the road as well. Not long ago, I was passed up by a '93 coupe with the appropriate '93 Silvia front clip, and no doubt with the right powerplant. To answer your question about the 240SXs SR trade up, I would say that it is easier accomplishing this on the S13 than on the S14. The technical difficulty is nearly identical on either model, but S13 SR engines are MUCH more readily available. You can use S14-S15 motors on the S13, but wiring the ECU and passing emissions becomes much more complex. Furthermore, the S13 SR20DET is generally a great deal less expensive. Jay! 07-25-2001, 09:43 PM Good. I might be able to afford "cheaper." :( What's the difference between the S13 hatch and coupe? I'm sure you have pictures handy. ;) I can't remember seeing any variation. Or do you mean the S14 when you say coupe? That would make sense, wouldn't it? Dillweed 07-26-2001, 12:30 AM Your right, I don't know what I was thinkin'!!!!!! That was a very stupid question, therefore I take it back. Sorry:p Morpheus XIII 07-29-2001, 06:56 AM What's the difference between the S13 hatch and coupe? I'm sure you have pictures handy. I can't remember seeing any variation. Or do you mean the S14 when you say coupe? --Silver S2000 VERY good question. I know this gets a lot of people here in the States; it got me for a while. First off, no, I don't mean the S14. In Japan it's very easy to differentiate the S13 coupe and hatchback. The coupe has a box-like body with slim rectangular fixed headlamps. The rear shows a similar theme, also with narrow elongated light fixtures. The hatchback on the other hand looks exactly like the ones we see on U.S. roads: pop-up lights, slanted fastback, semi-oval taillights, etc. Both coupe and hatchback of this era were built side by side as sister cars, and therefore parts were easily interchangeable. Their coupe was sold here around 1993, but it's hard to pick them out because they've been 'adapted' for North American consumers. Market research determined that pop-up lighting was 'in' at the time and so they incorporated the same old front clip on the coupes. Therefore, our '93 240SX trunkers had the original japanese rear-end blended with the hatchback's nose. This was also beneficial for Nissan because then a sporty appearing ragtop variation would be possible for the lineup (as you know, convertibles can generally be built only on coupe platforms). With parts generally becoming more available and cheaper, some Stateside enthusiasts are fitting their S13 coupes with the original J-spec fixed headlamps, along with SR powerplants, thereby recreating genuine Silvias. On a side note, the japanese call U.S. S13 coupes the "Onevia" (180SX front + Silvia rear). Conversely, a hatch with fixed lamps is called "Sileighty" (Silvia front + 180SX rear). Pictured below is a North American 240SX S13 coupe (front): Morpheus XIII 07-29-2001, 07:00 AM The same car from the rear (note the significant taillight and bodyshape difference from the A-pillar back, from the hatchback models pictured elsewhere in this forum): Morpheus XIII 07-29-2001, 07:15 AM And now for the same year Silvia S13s from the land of the rising sun. Obviously NOT stock, this one is my choice pick, created by AB-flug. Skin-wise, the stock models don't look all that different; factory issue headlights and front fenders are the same: (Food for thought: In order to purchase an S13 240SX coupe and recreate the japanese Silvia, one would be required to obtain a J-spec front bumper, hood, headlights, and fenders. If this person was an all-around modification enthusiast, wouldn't it be wiser to purchase the Silvia aerodynamics from the aftermarket in the first place?) Morpheus XIII 07-29-2001, 07:21 AM And these last shots are to show that the rears and sides of the japanese S13 Silvias are identical to those of the U.S. S13 240SX coupes. These particular cars are enhanced by Bomex: Morpheus XIII 07-29-2001, 07:23 AM Note that it IS a real Silvia with the fixed headlamps: Jay! 07-30-2001, 10:36 AM Thanks. I always thought the S13 coupe was a previous model. Didn't they trade selling the coupe for the hatchback around 1990? Morpheus XIII 07-30-2001, 07:07 PM In the U.S. the hatch came first in '89. The coupe was introduced around '93 and eventually became the prevailing 240SX. In Japan, the hatch came first but wasn't immediately replaced by the upcoming coupe. Instead they separated and were produced simultaneously for the next few years, somewhat like the Celica and Supra from long ago. Of course, the S13 hatch counterpart (180SX) didn't last as long as the Silvia, but it did get some well deserved facelifting around '96 before its demise. Could you imagine what an S15 hatchback might look like today? mav1178 08-25-2001, 03:36 AM Uh, Morpheus you are wrong In USA: Coupe and fastback were introduced in 1989 and sold through 1993 TOGETHER. In 1994 the convertible was the only model offered (from 1992 to 1994). In 1995 the S14 coupe was offered. In Japan: I don't have exact dates memorized off the top of my head, but the Silvia was introduced first with the CA18DET, then the 180SX was introduced with the same engine 6 months later. In early 1991 the Silvia with SR20DET was introduced, as was the SR in the 180SX. That's why if you take a look at the chassis designations for the S13, you can find out that there was a S13, a PS13, a RS13, RPS13, etc. P stands for the SR20DE/DET engine, while the R designates a fastback body style. The S14 was introduced in 1994 in Japan, with U.S. introduction a year later. Oh, and one more thing. The RWD SR20DET was *never* sold in the U.S. market, so it will NOT BE LEGAL. All swaps in the U.S. with the SR20DET are ILLEGAL. Don't make it sound like it is legal, because it is not. -alex Morpheus XIII 08-26-2001, 10:24 AM Yeah, I picked that up recently about the coupe and hatch being sold together in '89. Why I haven't seen this error sooner, God knows. Thanks for the convertible data; I never really knew (or cared for that matter) much about the S13 cabrios since they had little to do with genuine japanese performance (as in the Varietta) and pretty much catered to U.S. tastes (which again, reminds us of the KA-series motors) much like the FC3S RX-7 roadster. Originally posted by mav1178 Oh, and one more thing. The RWD SR20DET was *never* sold in the U.S. market, so it will NOT BE LEGAL. All swaps in the U.S. with the SR20DET are ILLEGAL. Don't make it sound like it is legal, because it is not. First off, no one ever said it was legal. Everyone who messes with J-spec SRs knows what they are getting into. On a side note, for a few, intentions may be to use this "illegal" machinery for off public property racing, where the law has no reach (believe me, not everyone is a street racer). Secondly, just because the government wants you to think that it is illegal for public usage doesn't automatically declare it as final. There are some loopholes for unusual japanese imported products. For whole cars, there are several gray market autos (and these are complete Silvias I am talking about, SR20DET and all) out there in the U.S. that have become certifiably legitimate--one good example being those brought through military connections (the irony: people use a governmental body to bypass rules set by the government). These are legal. A step up, we see Motorex and their street legal Skylines which surprise surprise, have again "illegal" RB26DETT motors. Of course, they've been certified with money (hint, hint). These are legal. A step down to the SR engines: Now these aren't exactly legal, but most consider it a minor setback, and it can be over-looked since you can always pay off the problem. I personally know a few 240SX owners using SR20DET powerplants, who pass smog emissions testings (even the visual test) and use them as daily drivers. Of course this won't work everywhere, and you might have to go to a 'trusted' service shop, but they do get by. No real major legal complaints or problems. The massive 240SX movement out there all focuses on the SR20DET. They get away with it. Legal or not, anyone can own an SR 240SX on the streets, as long as they are smart about the upkeep.
