Hard start on a 1992 Safari

My mom has a 1992 Safari, extended, 4.2L AWD. it has recently started acting up during ignition. when you turn the key to start the starter engages but the motor wont start. the only way to get it to start is to try it 3-5 times or give it gas, the amount varies. anyone got anyideas? we recently replaced the MAP sensor, thats the only recent work thats been done, aside from basice tune-up. its got 158K miles if thats of any relevance.

Re: Hard start on a 1992 Safari

I have a 1992 Safari which I recently had a problem with starting and idling. After taking out the idle air control and replacing it the problem was still there, I looked at the throttle position sensor it was ok, still the problem. I then went after the EGR valve, I found a peice of carbon had gotten stuck holding back a valve wich needs to move. I cleared the part and needed a new gasket which luckly I could not find at the big name retail auto stores, price $2.00. I found it a my local neighborhood auto parts he had one only it cost $10, I asked why he showed me they added a screen to stop debris from getting into the egr valve. My safari now starts without putting the gas to the floor and it idles. I hope this story helps.

Re: Hard start on a 1992 Safari

Beagle may have something there. If your engine code is a W then you have the CPI (spider). They have a problem with the fuel regulator leaking. The place where the CPI sits in inside the intake Plenum. So when the regulator starts leaking the fuel is sucked right down the intake. The is unmetered fuel and will sometimes flood the engine. It will also cause a rich smell when idling and an occasional miss. Gas smell can sometimes be noted after shutting off the engine. Good luck and keep us updated.
