You have to replace the EGR valve and the solenoid at the same time. Not the easiest job to do, because of the bottom bolts of the EGR valve. But with some extensions, busted knuckles, and time you can get them out. You will have to remove your intake if you still have a stock one.

Go to your nearest auto salvage yard and get the solenoid off a junk engine.Get one off any Chrysler engine will fit and that what goes bad if you want to go the cheap way.A new egr valve with the new solenoid,it comes that way and is about $150.00 from the dealer only.

No way to confirm that a salvage one is in good working condition. Besides they are $85 from the my local dealer. Autozone sell them also but they are $94.99 online!

I have put on used egr soleniods and on Chrysler products and they worked.I bet the ones from AutoZone(really called AutoJunk) are no good.AutoZone parts are 100% junk!I guarentee an AutoZone part gets replaced 3 or more times because the parts are cheap.

Re: EGR replacement

wafrederick,

I just imagined going to a salvage yard and paying 80 bucks for a ERG valve and not knowing that the previous owner had just replaced it prior to salvage with an autozone product. That would be kind of ironic wouldn't it. 80 bucks for a junked hunk of 100% junk. Would that make it 2 x junk or junk squared?
I have a 96 Neon that is about 25% Autozone/Napa. It works exquisitly.

It was the solenoid part only that I put on and that is what goes bad.I know about AutoZone parts. One of my father's customers brought his Chevy pick up in for a miss and some moron put cheap plugwires from AutoZone. My father replaced those junk Autozone wires with high quality, top of the line Carquest plugwires on and the miss was gone.

The valve also gets stuck and will not function properly. Sometimes it can be cleaned and lubed. I hadn't thought of just replacing the solenoid as I currently have the EGR code, but I just have it blocked off for now.

You can try taking it off and cleaning and relubing it, but it might not help. The solenoid is that thing that is around the stock intake tube. That is what probably needs to be replaced. The part is about $85 from the dealer or you can block off the EGR and get a Mopar PCM. The Mopar PCM doesn't check the EGR valve, so you will not get a code 32.

You can get the Mopar PCM for about $200 from Modern Performance if you have a maunul tranny. If you have an auto, then you will be required to do some extra work.

I don't know of any way to check the solenoid.
