You do have a problem with the ignition cylinder, There was a similar problem on a different thread not too long ago, I think that in that case they had it repaired by a locksmith. Or your other option is to have the cylinder replaced by a dealer, but you will probably end up with two different keys [one ignition and one door/trunk].
O hope this helps.

I don't see a problem. Looks like your one of the fortunate ones that can leave your car running without leaving the keys in it. or maybe you mean you can turn the key to the lock position with the car in gear which isn't as useful unless you get your car towed.

GAH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Danger, Will Robinson, Danger!!!!!!!

Get it repaired post-haste, like Hoags states it not hard or too costly, and is most likely reason.

One other small likely is a misaligned shifter cable that "reads" park, but doesn't let the cylynder lick into off.

In any case, having that prob. is dangerous!!!!!!!!

1] Car can turn off on the road without notice, that would not be fun time.

2] Steering column could lock up with engine running, that will ruin your day and maybe you.

Get it taken care of, plz!!!!!!!!!

I speak of personal experience.

Personal experience being? I don't see the car shutting off without notice unless the ignition switch is bad. As far as the steering column I wouldn't worry about it unless the key positions didn't line up right (off became lock, start became run, etc etc) or if the steering column didn't lock up when the key was turned to lock and unlock when the key was turned to off.

Wait until the cylinder misaligns in the column, which it will, and lock up the wheel. Want to take that chance??

I agree, get it fixed right away... Just the thought of the steering wheel locking at 70 on the highway (for me its usually around 90...) is scary enough, going through a corner and not being able to straighten out at the end... Wow thats a big tree... Its also possible to get stuck somewhere with a car that will run but not go into gear, or not be able to shut the car off....

Anytime that ignition cylonder is misaligned all sorts of things can happen at the most inopertune time... DON"T TAKE THE CHANCE!!! Aside from the steering locking up and the car shutting down you may also have a situation in which a flat blade screwdriver may work just as easy as the key... BYE-BYE RIDE!!!...NEW OWNER or PARTS DONATION.

Re: 2002 key comes out even if I'm not in park

Lotta what if's here, I'm still waiting to hear whether the steering wheel is affected because the shift lock failing doesn't mean the ignition is misaligned. And some GM owners have been able to pull the key out (with or without a little force) due to the way the key is cut and the wear on the key and cylinder. I've seen it all and I wouldn't worry about the steering locking up unless the "off" position became the new "lock" position...It all depends but if you wanna be worry warts you shouldn't be doing 70 at any time because anything can happen to a couple dozen parts and you'll be shit outta luck. Not likely some may say but I've seen tons of crap that just failed and at 70 would be very bad. While I'm thinking about it I'm gonna add this. Your 4-door sedan, mini or big van, truck, suv, compact car are not track cars and the street is not a road course. You think 5 lugs is more sport ready than 4 or because your car is light 4 is good as 5. Well your wrong, I've seen it proven. Not once, not twice, not three times, but more than I can count on both hands. Lugs weren't tight you say, some yes the lugs came off but others no. The others the whole rotor came off with the tire, and even a couple the whole suspension went with the tire while the car went the other way. You've been warned, hopefully I or anyone else won't see your tireless car in the street with you standing there in daze telling yourself "how the hell"
