Problems shifting into 2nd

I have a 96 SL2 and just started having problems shifting into 2nd today. It's intermittent, but it happens more often than not. If i'm trying to go from 1st to 2nd, it seems like it's just not finding the gear. The shifter has slack as if it's in neutral, like 2nd gear just isn't there. But if i'm downshifting from 3rd or 4th into 2nd, I can find 2nd without any problems. Also, if i'm attempting to get it into 2nd while the car is not moving (at a redlight), I can usually find 2nd without a problem.

The clutch is new so I don't think that's the problem. A while back, the grommet on one of the connecting rods at the bottom of the shifter broke and I had to wire it up and I'm wondering if the wire job is coming loose and that might be causing it, but I think if that were the case, I'd have problems with more than just one gear. Any ideas?

Someone has already suggested the syncro for 2nd gear, but if i'm not mistaken, syncros usually make quite loud noises when they are going out. And there hasn't been any noise.
