Re: has this happened to anyone esle....

lol...then check the fan dude...look around the fan blade and see if anything is rubbing and scraping...it could just be something simple like the fan guard...or you could need a new rad fan altogether

Re: has this happened to anyone esle....

ya but you should still check...spin the fan..if it stops while your spinning it by hand then its the fan...also if the grinding speed increases with the rpm speed then the fan is out as a possibility

the fan runs at a constanty speed. Spin it by hand feeling for a bad bearing. They can make a lot of noises similar to what you describe.
Good Luck.

The belt is tensioned automatically by a spring loaded belt tensioner. There's no adjustment to it.

Re: has this happened to anyone esle....

You say its comming on with the fan, and from the alternator, perhaps its under the altenator? IE the water pump, if part of its broken off and entrained in there it could sound like sand or somthing tearing apart the blades of the impeller. I know when my pump failed the blades were gone, still in the engine, or disentegrated i dont know lol

Re: has this happened to anyone esle....

Maybe a bad alternator? If it starts when the fan comes on, then maybe the alternator is having a hard time keeping the battery charged. Happened in my dads truck, the alternator would make weird noises when the fan kicked in. Maybe take it somewhere and get it tested. just a thought

if it was the water pump it would do it all the time because your water pump is ALWAYS running i would check for brokeded fan but maybe your alternator is going out?
