02 Avalanche 1500 4x4 Rear Axle Grinding

Hi,

I just purchased a 2002 Chevy Avalanche 1500 4x4. After a week, I noticed a slight grinding noise as I got up to 30 to 40 mph. After taking it to a friend who is a mechanic, we can here the Rear End grinding from all over (both sides and the middle). I had it inspected before I bought it, but they didn't check out the drive train.

It is going to cost me anywhere from $600 to $1800 to rebuild the rear end axle with a bearing kit and possibly more.

This truck only has 47,000 miles on it.

Does anyone know if this is a Chevy recall or have had the same problem.

Thanks,
Kyle.

Maybe the place that inspected it will foot the bill for being incompetent.
Sounds like a major rebuild. Be it me, I would go for an Auburn limited slip carrier instead of the original GM while you are at it and it's probably also cheaper. I've found that they outperform the GM units both in traction and durability. They are also smoother in their operation. Seems odd that the diff had it at this mileage but it all depends on how hard the truck was used.

If this was NYS, with their lemon regs, you'd be getting this for free if this was a licensed u/c dealer.
