wondering if paint gun matterLonely SOl 06-17-2005, 12:33 AM Hi I was wondering if the name brand of the paint gun matter at all. I am thinking about getting 2 devilbiss Finishline 3 HVLP guns for basecoat and clear coat and Titan/Vapor gun for primer/sealer (can I use a cheap paint gun like TITAn/Vapor HVLP one for primer and sealer). I was wondering if that is good guns to do the car with or should I get something else. If anyone has any suggestion of guns with reasonable prices I would really appreciate it. Also, has anyone used sharpe finex paint gun before, it is cheaper and was wondering if it works the same Also, I have a conventional paint gun right now and whenever I spray primer from it, it spits out and it is not a contious flow, Also, it forms beads on the surface, it doesn't feel smooth at all. I think the tip size is too small thats why I am going with a 1.8mm gun. I would appreciate any help, thank you kenseth17 06-17-2005, 07:03 PM Your choice of guns sounds good to me. You don't really need an expensive gun to spray primer. The 1.8 tip may be kind of small for some thicker primers. That may be some of the problem, or reduce the primer more. The spitting, could be several things, like a worn packing or a connection not tight. GTmike400 06-17-2005, 11:30 PM I've got a Binks Model 7 with a 1.6mm tip that I shoot K36 Highbuild primer with just fine. Then we have the Devilbiss Plus for base and topcoat. Choices sound good to me. kenseth17 06-18-2005, 04:01 PM wow a binks model 7. I remember them being one of the most popular guns when I started painting. That guns a classic, and a lot of manufactures did knock offs on that gun. Binks isn't in business anymore, well they are they were bought out by I think devilbiss. We had some binks hvlp I think Mach something at my last job. Weren't too bad of a gun. Lonely SOl 06-18-2005, 05:46 PM Thank you guys for helping I took yalls advice and ordered 2 finishline devilbiss for basecoat (1.5mm) and clearcoat (1.3mm) and also a sharpe finex primer gun (1.8mm) Hopefully they will work. Also, I have 2 questions, first, i have never painted before but am gonna paint my car, I know the concept, I am going to test panel before doing the whole thing, but if I did do the whole thing, what is the best place to start and go from there Example, start at right fender, to hood, etc.) i just dont want dry sports. Another question is, is it necessary or a good idea to wet sand the base before you clear it. Lonely SOl 06-18-2005, 05:50 PM Also, every time I spray with the generic brand gun(1.4mm) which I have right now it gives me like concrete surface, How do people get a uniform smooth look with prier, I think my gun is not good, thats why I ordered the sharpe HVLP gravity feed (1.8mm). Do u think that would help. By the way, I am spraying marhyde 2k primer. kenseth17 06-19-2005, 12:09 AM Everyone has different patterns around a car. You just have to jump around so you don't have the clear set up when you get back to it. I usually start with the roof and down the pillars. Go to one quarter, bumper and trunk to other quarter. Back to the side I started with and do door and do the other door and finish up with fenders and hood. Sometimes I may spray more before jumping to the other side. No the base does not need to be sanded before clear. If you do sand it, expecially with metallic and pearl colors, you will need to spray more base before clear. You can sand the base to knock down dirt nibs or whatever if needed, but just remember to apply more basecoat to whatever you sanded. To get a uniform surface depends on many factors, Proper spray technique gun setup, and correct tip and air cap, and proper reducer for temp. Your not using a fast reducer in warm weather at all are you and what about gun speed and distance. Gun should be about 6-8 inches away. Make sure the gun is spraying a good fan, and you have the bottom knob (fluid control) turned out far enough. 1.4 does seem a bit small. Also you are not getting a bunch of overspray landing on the surface of the car that you are spraying over are you. Is your compressor supplying enough air for the gun to atomize properly. MikeisNissan 05-10-2006, 05:08 PM Hi im very short on money so i was just curious if i could use a 1.8mm spray gun to lay down base coat enamel, and clear coat.
