GPS Antenna?rrdstarr 04-18-2002, 06:15 PM I just got an external antenna today for my StreetPilot ColorMap!!! For those of you that have them how did you route your cable? And where did you put the antenna at for best reception? Pictures to please! http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/116428GPSAntenna.jpg Toy Man 04-18-2002, 09:31 PM It does matter where you put it as long as it has an unobstructed view of the sky. I just put mine on for trips so no pictures but I have put it a number of places on the roof and all of the locations worked fine. I have never lost sync in canyons, trees, etc. I think your main consideration would be where to place it in a permanent location with concealed wiring. Maybe under the plastic roof carrier. The carrier should not interfere being made of plastic but you could try it and see if there is a difference in signal strength. Chris Coyle had a nice installation. He put it on the same bracket that held his CB antenna attached to the rear hatch. You might see if he still has a picture of it on his web site. rrdstarr 04-22-2002, 05:43 PM I decided on a location for my external antenna. I have it mounted with double-sided 3M tape (heavy-duty) on the windshield in the upper drivers side, just in case the photo doesn't work! The cable is run down the weather-strip and into the cab. I took it out and tested it for comparison against the stock ColorMap StreetPilot antenna. On average I got three to four more satellites using the external antenna. I sat in the same location and swapped the two out. Most of the time if I was facing South or West or East I got all 12 satellites! :) http://files.automotiveforums.com/uploads/912745GPSantennaW.jpg Kennedy 04-28-2002, 01:41 PM I installed mine this weekend. Magnetic mounted right next to the roof basket, ran the wiring through the sunroof under headliner, down the a-pillar and up the dash. Very clean. I think the rack may obstruct the view a bit, but since it's magnet I can move it around when I actually am using it. Automotive Network, Inc., Copyright ©2012
