Car Reved up on its own! What should I do??

My car is a 99 GP SE 3.1L w/ 111,000 miles. Less than a week ago, after driving my car for a while and putting it in park, i noticed it was idling at 1500 rpm. I shut the car off and restarted it and it idled like it normally does (700-800 rpm or so). Then the other day I drove the car a short distance ( only 2 miles). I was running late so I drove pretty fast for this short trip and when I put the car in park it was again idling at 1500rpm. This time I tapped the accelerator. Imediatley after that, the car started to quickly rev up on its own. When it hit 2500 rpms I quickly shut it off, then restarted it and it idled normally.

What could have caused this? It doesnt happen everytime I drive it.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Get an exorsism performed? Just Kidding Have you checked your throttle cables lately? If they feel like they are getting a little bound up spray a litle wd-40 and you should be good to go

Do what GTPWarrior says but I would also clean the mass airflow sensor. It can cause cars to idle like you describe. When they get dirty they can cause a false reading in the computer causing it to give the engine more fuel than required.

Yep I agree with GTP DAD. I had forgot to mention that.
