side view mirror problems

So my buddy tried to fold my mirrors in this week and he used a little too much force and now the mirror is very loose. From what I can gather by looking at the drivers side mirror, it seems that some sort of locking washer broke off. Nothing else looks broken. My question is how do I get the mirror off to get a better look at it? I have a 99 silverado with power mirrors, not heated. Any helpers???

Thanks.

I say make your buddy buy you a new mirror.

to take the mirror off is very easy. you pull the little triangle panel of the front top corner of the door off. then take 4 - 10mm bolts out and unplug. thats the easy part. taking it apart is the fun one.

Thats pretty much what I am wondering...is there some trick to it? Does the mirror glass come off first somehow? Or is it not meant to come apart anymore than what you have described?

Re: side view mirror problems

The glass comes off but you have to be careful. Tip the mirror to the side that gives you the most access to thecenter hub and get some small straight screwdrivers. Pry the tabs loose of the center hub and after a few are loose the mirror should pop off. Don't pull up on the glass to hard, it will break.

Good Luck.

Re: side view mirror problems

I recently did this and cracked the mirror on the right side. Of course they're the expensive ones with the signal. ($262 from the dealer) Does anyone know of a source for replacement mirror glass besides the junkyard or dealer?

Re: side view mirror problems

I'm actually painting the mirrors as a favor. I cracked it popping it out. It has to be an exact replacement.

Re: side view mirror problems

Muth makes the signal mirrors for GM. You can go to the MUTH web site or find one on eBay. Do your homework and you can find a reputable seller and get a decent price.

Call your local glass shop, they will get you a Redicut 3254HS, which is the right side mirror, heated, with the signal. Expensive, but cheaper than buying the whole unit from a dealer. This is for the glass only, no attachments. If you broke the backing plate then you'll need a Redicut 3254HSA, which is the whole assembly.

Re: side view mirror problems

No, the mirror is barely cracked, but the rest of it is fine. Any idea how much? Thanks, everybody for the help.
