2000 GTP window regulator experience
i've found it interesting how common this window regulator problem seems to be with the grand prix. anybody know why this is the case?
anyway, i've got a 2000 GTP sedan and have had really good look overall with the car. we do minimal maintenance, have over 91,000 miles, and it has never left us stranded. so no complaints about this... but, i (like many others on this forum) was so frustrated at being hosed for $500 to have my driver's side window regulator replaced last summer. of course it broke in the middle of a torrential downpour and with a WHUMP the glass dropped below the weatherstripping on the door panel so i couldn't even tape it shut.
then, this spring, the passenger side front window started making the same straining or creaking sounds that the driver side had made a few months before breaking. it hasn't broken yet, but i'm waiting. so last week, the drivers side rear window made a snapping noise and became disabled! that window is rarely used! i saw that someone had said on this forum that once the first one breaks they seem to keep breaking at the rate of one per year. ridiculous!
does anyone know if the remodeled (2004+) GPs have the same window regulator as the 97 - 2003?
so here was my fix for the rear drivers side window:
1. remove door panel and window regulator from door (after detaching from window)
2. disassemble cable spool from motor and remove cables from spool.
3. reinsert cable studded ends into the plastic housing on the window guide bracket (the piece that slides up/down and to which the window attaches).
4. reinstall window regulator (with free end cables) back into door. attach window. pull top side cable tight, wrap through a couple sheet metal holes, and crimp the cable underneath one of the screw heads which fasten the regulator to the door.
5. reinstall door panel.
voila! one nonworking window that is sealed closed! and all for the price of a torx head screwdriver. as a bonus, my car is lighter by a couple pounds too (the weight of the motor assembly) so i might get better gas mileage...
a temporary fix, i realize. but this way i have time to research which online offbrand window regulators others on this forum have had luck with...
