Has anyone changed an exhaust manifold gasket from manifold to motor. Im getting a tick and traced it to a broken off bolt on manifold.Garages are telling me 300 to 500 bucks realistically even if all break after taking manifold off then i should be able to grab whats left and back it out right. This looks like a real job so i want some input guys thanks DAVE

Personally it sounds to be a bit much, Not really a tough job to do. Take it around town to some other mechanics and get some more estimates.

I agree it does sound like a bit much. They may just be giveing there self a little room for error on their quote though. It can be a real SOB to get a broken manifold bolt out.

just did an 03 with 6 litre diesel. alumunin head and steel bolts. yes this is a bitch of a job. 3 broken bolts and 6 hours before i had them extracted and the manifold back on. and that is with access to every kind of tool you can think of. next time i will definately give the job to some one else.

We've seen a slew of broken exhaust bolts on those super dutys (I'm assuming gas engine because it isn't common on diesels at all). We've been charging 3.5 hours and it's up in the air if we make money or not. They can sometimes be pulled by what's left with a stud extractor, but sometimes they break off again, or others break off flush with the block and then it's easy out time...half the time we end up helicoiling. If you aren't too sure about the job, this is a good one to go ahead and bite the bullet...500 bucks is cheaper than a head job (no jokes, please).
